What You Will Need
Please ensure that you bring your passport, Swiss Pass and your Gornergrat voucher, which was sent separately with the rest of your rail tickets. Ensure you keep your ticket throughout the day as you’ll need to show it before each leg of the journey.
The Highest Open-Air Cog Railway in Europe
Built in 1898, the Gornergrat Railway is the highest open-air cog railway in Europe. The train ride is about 33 minutes, and the climb up the mountain is one of the most incredible views in Switzerland. The Matterhorn is right outside your window through almost the entire ride, giving photo opportunities and allowing you to check the Matterhorn off your bucket-list!
Sit on the right side of the train on your way up for the best views of the Matterhorn! We also recommend dressing warm. Even in the summer, it can be chilly and windy at the top.
Gornergrat Station
The Gornergrat Bahn Railway station is located across the street from the Zermatt Main Station. At the top, spend time at the various attractions – the 360-degree loop, viewpoints, endless hiking options for all abilities as well as the observatories, and the restaurant at the 3100 Kulm Hotel.
You can travel at any time you would like! The Gornergrat Railway starts running as early as 7 am in the summer, and trains depart every 20-40 minutes. We recommend that you use the SBB App for timetables to plan your journey.
Please note: If you purchased priority boarding on your ascent up to Gornergrat, your departure time is fixed to the time on your travel documents.
