Trip Overview

Travelling from Hanoi to Da Nang-Hoi An on board the “Reunification Express” train is a great journey through time and landscape. It is part of a national north-south line of 1,726km, finished in 1936 during French colonial rule, connecting Hanoi in Tonkin to Touraine (Da Nang today) in Annam to Cochinchine. It was destroyed and repaired many times during and after the war, in 1976 it was named “Reunification” train as a symbol of the country healing after war-torn decades. Over the next 10 days you travel pass rice fields, fishing villages and busy neighborhoods, ‘Sea cloud pass’ and dense jungles. ‘The Wheels of Reunification’ are an integral part of Vietnam’s history and passes through the best landscapes. On this tour you will get a real example of Vietnamese culture.

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL HANOI
Welcome on arrival at the airport, transfer to the hotel for check-in. (Overnight in Hanoi)

DAY 2 – HANOI
Today enjoy a full day city tour - visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (outside only) and the former President’s stilt house. Continue visiting the iconic One-Pillar Pagoda, the Museum of Historical. Lunch at a local restaurant. Followed by a visit to the Temple of Literature, Ngoc Son Temple and Hoan Kiem Lake. the Old Quarter of Hanoi, with 36 old streets before heading to typical Hanoi local coffee shop where you settle down for refreshment with local drink or a glass of Bia Hoi, fresh locally brewed beer Drop by Thang Long theatre to enjoy famous Water Puppet Show, the unique Vietnamese traditional art.  (Overnight in Hanoi) B L

DAY 3 – HANOI to MAI CHAU
At 8am depart from Hanoi for Mai Chau. This scenic drive takes around 3.5 hours and will provide you with lots of photo opportunities. Arrive at Mai Chau around noon. In mid-afternoon, start exploring the valley with a walk around nearby villages, meet people of Thai ethnic minority in Lac and Pom Coong villages. (Overnight in Mai Chau) B

DAY 4 – MAI CHAU – NINH BINH
Wake up in the middle of Mai Chau valley. Start exploring surrounding villages, the market, rice paddies, and local way of life by bicycle. Transfer to Ninh Binh, also called "the Dry Halong Bay" and row a sampan along the limestone rocks lying on rice fields and forming a landscape like that in Guilin, China. Continue to visit Bich Dong pagoda. Visit the ancient capital of Hoa Lu with temples of Dinh and Le dynasties. Then transfer back to your hotel (Overnight in Ninh Binh) B

DAY 5 – NINH BINH to HA LONG BAY
Drive to Halong passing the seaport town Hai Phong. Short sightseeing tour in Hai Phong. Continue to Halong. Upon arrival in Halong Bay, board your boat for an unforgettable cruise. Welcome seafood lunch on board. Cruise the bay visiting some islands and caves. Late afternoon, admire the sunset over the bay, enjoy happy hour on the bar deck or attend a cooking demonstration. DAY 6 – HA LONG BAY to HANOI – HUE
Start the day with a Tai Chi class on the sundeck. Have a late breakfast before disembarkation. Return to Halong wharf, disembark and transfer back to Hanoi. Then at 4pm join the Night street food tour - an exciting walk to seek and find Ha Noi delectable street food.  Start first with a cold glass of Bia Hoi, popular draft beer, around Ta Hien street, so-called International Crossroad. Next get a bowl of noodle soup, locally known as Bun Thang by the legendary Madam Duc. Next enjoy a stroll alongside Hoan Kiem Lake before reaching Saint Joseph Cathedral. Then enjoy Bánh G?i (Pillow shaped crispy dumplings) and the delicately made fish sauce will surely make it tastier
Keep walking through the Old quarter before stopping by Bánh M? Lãn Ông stand, selling thin baguette styled bread with pate. Your eyes will then be by delighted the colorful and flavorful varieties of O Mai (Salted or Sugared Dried Fruits) in Hang Duong (Sweet) street. O Mai are made from the most common tropical fruits such as star fruit, tamarind, kumquat, pineapple, and mango. Taste, buy and take away as a dessert. Finish by ending the night like a local, over a cup of bold egg coffee. Hotel pick up for the night train to Hue (Overnight onboard sleeper train) B

DAY 7 – HUE
Breakfast picnic on board. Pick up and transfer from Hue station to take a tour of art and handicraft for wellness at Thanh Tien and Sinh Village. Free time for lunch, then in the afternoon a drive to visit Imperial Citadel and Thien Mu pagoda (Overnight in Hue) B

DAY 8 – HUE – DA NANG – HOI AN
In the morning visit Dong Ba market. Transfer to train station to board the local train SE1 (10.50-13.15) or similar (depart from Hue –to Da Nang) - soft seats in shared carriage with local travelers. Free time for lunch. Upon arrival in Danang, pick up and transfer to visit Cham Museum, Marble Mountain and proceed to Hoi An. Check in and leisure time. (Overnight in Hoi An) B

DAY 9-  HOI AN
Morning walking tour of Hoi An to discover the historic town which used to be a prosperous seaport city during the 16th to 18th centuries. Here you will see residents raise silkworms and produce silk for Hoi An's burgeoning textile industry. Afternoon free time for your own activities (shopping …) (Overnight in Hoi An) B

Optional: Fishing village and basket boat tour with lunch or dinner on boat– 4 hours

You will enjoy a wide range of experiences - from learning traditional fishing techniques to paddling the strange and unique Vietnamese bamboo basket boats while exploring the now tranquil coconut-palm flanked waterways of a past war. On this tour we provide an authentic social and cultural insight into the local Vietnamese way of life. As well you will take part in some hands-on activities.

Optional: Cooking class – Enjoy a welcome drink. Visit Hoi An’s colorful market, and experience the amazing sights, sounds and aromas of this busy market, at the same time, interact with the local sellers and purchase some of the ingredients to be used in the cooking lesson later.
Board the boat for a leisure cruise (25 minutes) along the Hoi An River to the Red Bridge Cooking School, a good chance to see some of the local life. Upon arrival, discover the cooking school’s herb and vegetable garden, before learning about some of Hoi An’s and Vietnam’s well-known dishes. The cooking lesson last about 2 hours – each dish is firstly demonstrated by the Red Bridge chef’s, before you prepare the same dish yourself. Included in the class is a brief introduction to Vietnamese food carving (plate decoration). After the lesson, sit down and enjoy what you have cooked.

DAY 10- HOI AN – DA NANG
Free time until transfer to Da Nang airport for flight home B
