Bukhara

Bukhara was one of the most prominent stops along the Silk Road, and this ancient city was also a major medieval centre for Islamic theology and culture. Even today, it is a major tourist destination due to the many well-preserved mosques, minarets, and bazaars, some of which date back as far as the 9th century. UNESCO sponsored the renovation of much of the city in 1999, to celebrate its 2,500th anniversary.
