The Serai

The Serai

We are part of an entrepreneurial tradition that goes back 130 years. At SUJÁN, we cherish creativity and draw inspiration from a family ethic that endures to this day; a tradition that values the power of partnership and celebrates the joy of living.

SUJÁN derives its name from Sardar Bahadur Sujan Singh of Hadali whose ancestors served as generals and commanders in the Sikh armies in the 17th and 18th centuries. Sujan Singh was the first member of his clan to branch out from the martial tradition into commerce, perhaps due to the sudden death of his father, and SUJÁN Enterprises was thus born.

The family diversified into a range of activities including trade, oil, cotton and real estate and most notably, construction and real estate development under the aegis of Messrs Sujan Singh – Sobha Singh, the latter part being the name of his elder son, Sardar Bahadur Sir Sobha Singh. In turn, Sir Sobha Singh worked closely with Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker to construct the city of New Delhi, which was proclaimed the capital of India in 1911.

Enterprise, creativity and a commitment to perfection have been the guiding principles of our family work ethic ever since. These principles have remained constant as the family transitioned over four generations to make their own small and diverse contributions to India.

Ganges View

Ganges View

Asi Ghat, where the hotel is located, houses the Asi-Sangameshwara, a significant Shaiva shrine in which Asi Madhava is the main vaishnavite deity. It is believed that the original shrine of Asi Madhava had gradually eroded over the centuries. In 1870, Dulhin Radha Dulari Kuwari – a princess of the Sursand State of Bihar, widow of Srimant Damodar Dev Narayan Singh of Chainpur State in Bihar – settled down at Asi and became involved in philanthropic activities. Local pundits of that time suggested her to reconstruct the Asi Madhava shrine and build the ghat overlooking Ganga (the Ganges). The land to build the temple and the ghat was bought from Kashiraj Prabhu Narayan Singh in 1903. The temple was constructed over the years in Panchayatana style; the key shrine being dedicated to Vishnu and Laxmi. After Dulhinji’s death in 1927, her son-in-law, Kumar Kailash Kinkar Narayan Singh and her grandson, Kumar Keshav Kinkar Narayan Singh immigrated in Varanasi. Married into some of the most prominent families of the city, including the Jagatganj branch of the Kashiraj family, they were known for their great love for music, art and literature. The present generation of the family having converted the family home into the hotel in 1990, have continued their inherited tradition of patronage of the arts.

Brijrama Palace

Conveniently perched on the river bank, on the Darbanga Ghaat, is the Brijrama Palace, one of the oldest landmarks of the city. The history of the palace dates back to the year 1812, in which it was built by Shridhara Narayana Munshi’ the then minister for the estate of Nagpur. In 1915, the Brahmin King of Darbhanga (Bihar) ‘Rameshwar Singh Bahadur’ acquired the palace and the Ghat also came to be known as Darbhanga Ghat. The first sight of the hotel is its historical elevator, installed in 1918, built to help the Darbanga king climb the second floor of the palace, also boasts of being the first elevator of India. The architecture and the design of the palace are directly influenced by the erstwhile ruling dynasty of the Marathas. The sandstone walls and pillars graced with Maratha art accentuate the palace architecture. Also, you may notice, a betel leaf runner along the roof corners of the walls- a signature pattern followed by Marathas during the ancient time.
