Re-visiting Brussels

My last visit to Brussels had been as a teenager on a college trip, when we were shown around the European Parliament building. Whilst the building was impressive, being a teenager with no interest in politics at that time, Brussels did not make a great impression on me. So going back for the first time since then and as an adult I felt a little anxious as I boarded the Eurostar to start my journey - anxious to find out if the memories of a teenager had any merit. Is there more to Brussels?

Of course, needless to say, there is a lot more to Brussels than just the European Parliament. There’s chocolate, waffles and beer! Although I am not a beer drinker I was recommended a pub just off Grand Place (which is a major attraction in itself but more on that later) where they serve beer in every flavour; coconut, banana and even chocolate, to name a few. So how could I resist? The smell of warm, sweet waffles entices you at every corner, not to mention the chocolate shops tempting you along the way.

But this is me simply speaking from my stomach. Brussels had yet to capture my heart. This happened the minute I walked into the Grand Place. I first saw it at night and the square was being prepared for the Ommegang festival, honouring the arrival of Charles V into Brussels in 1549. I love all things historical and the Grand Place certainly takes you back, especially during the Ommegang festival, with actors enacting the dances of the time and the procession of the nobles in costume. It truly was fascinating to watch. There are numerous pubs and restaurants around the square offering various cuisines, from Italian to Spanish and Greek or anything else you fancy.

Finally no visit to Brussels is complete without seeing the Manneken Pis (literal translation, little peeing man). It is only 61 centimetres in height but it is the most fascinating statue with theories and stories of its origin, ranging from it being a gift to the more sinister history involving spies. Mannekin Pis was the only other memory I had of Brussels from my previous visit and I was glad it was still there and had become even more popular with time.

I have never been gladder to have my memories to be proved wrong because there is a lot more to Brussels, with a vibrant night life, amazing history and the yummiest food I’ve ever had. I’ll definitely be going back for more.
