Take a direct train from Basel to Lucerne and begin your journey with a day trip to stunning Mount Pilatus via the steepest cogwheel railway in the world. Continue by train through the vivid Swiss countryside to Wengen, the beautiful resort town at the foot of Jungfrau Mountain. Enjoy a day-trip on the Jungfrau Railway to the peak and experience unsurpassed panoramic views of Europe. Also journey to the summit of Schilthorn, and marvel at the panoramic views of the spectacular Swiss skyline, with the peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the background. Finally, take the train to Zermatt, and spend two days enjoying the resort town and taking an exciting trip on the Gornergrat Cog Railway to the top of this spectacular peak, with views of the Matterhorn in the background

Daily Itinerary:

DAY 1 – BASEL TO LUCERNE
Begin your journey on the fast and comfortable Eurostar from London to Paris, then switch trains in Paris and again in Basel as you make your way to Lucerne. Check in at your hotel in Lucerne for a two-night stay, and after getting settled, begin exploring all this stunning Central Switzerland city has to offer. The medieval Chapel Bridge is a great place to start as one of the oldest, covered wooden bridges in Europe. Lucerne is also full of picturesque town squares where you can relax, indulge in some Swiss delicacies and soak in the Swiss culture. (Overnight in Lucerne)

DAY 2 - MOUNT PILATUS DAY TRIP
After breakfast this morning, enjoy an exciting trip to the top of the steepest cogwheel railway in the world. First enjoy a scenic hours' steam cruise on Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad, where you then take the 30-minute ride which has an average gradient of 35%. The Mount Pilatus Cogwheel Railway operates between May and November, whilst at other times you can reach the top via a spectacular aerial gondola and cableway. At the top you'll find the historic Pilatus Kulm Hotel and restaurant where you can enjoy refreshments or you can enjoy one of the numerous walking trails, but beware of the legendary dragon who has magical healing powers and lives in the mountain. After soaking up the wonderful views, make your way back down the mountain massif via the jaw dropping gondola and cable car to Kriens and a short bus ride to Lucerne. (Overnight Lucerne) B

DAY 3 - WENGEN
After breakfast this morning, take the scenic train ride from Lucerne to Interlaken, and then on through Lauterbrunnen to Wengen. On arrival in Wengen, check in at your hotel for a two-night stay and begin to explore the city. The picture-perfect resort town lies at the foot of the Jungfrau and boasts stunning mountain views, ample recreational activities year-round, and a family-friendly, welcoming atmosphere. DAY 4 - JUNGFRAU DAY TRIP
A highlight of any trip to Switzerland is a visit to world-famous Jungfrau Mountain, appropriately named the ‘Top of Europe'. Today you will ascend snowy Jungfrau via Lauterbrunnen to Europe's highest railway station, at 3,454 metres (11,332 ft). Witness glaciers, waterfalls and wildlife on the route, which traverses the Eiger and Mönch mountains. At the top, enjoy the incredible views, and a number of fun attractions, as well as a choice of restaurants and bars. (Overnight in Wengen) B

DAY 5 - SCHILTHORN DAY TRIP
After breakfast this morning, use your Swiss Pass to travel by train and by cable car for the breathtaking journey to the summit of the Schilthorn, with impressive mountain and valley views the entire way up. At the top, marvel at the panoramic views of the spectacular Swiss skyline, with the peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the background. Relive those famous scenes from On Her Majesty's Secret, the 1969 James Bond movie that featured the revolving restaurant, Piz Gloria, and the black ski run that starts at the summit and leads down to the Engetal below Birg. DAY 6 - ZERMATT
This morning, use your Swiss Pass to take the scenic rail journey from Wengen to Zermatt, passing lovely valley and dramatic mountain views along the way. On arrival in Zermatt, check in at your hotel for a two-night stay and begin exploring the beautiful, car-free alpine village located in the shadow of the Matterhorn. (Overnight in Zermatt) B

 

DAY 7 - ZERMATT/GORNERGRAT DAY TRIP
Today, take an exciting ride on the Gornergrat cog railway, which climbs from 1,604 metres above sea level to 3,090 metres in just 33 minutes, and is a marvel of 19th Century engineering. From the top, take in one of the most spectacular panoramas in all of Switzerland with the iconic outline of the Matterhorn as well as the surrounding peaks and glaciers all around you. You might be lucky enough to spot an Chamois or Marmot during your visit, and enjoy a stroll through the nature reserve and maybe even enjoy a fondue. Take the same route back down to Zermatt where you can enjoy the numerous small bars and restaurants on the car-free roads. (Overnight Zermatt) B

DAY 8 – DEPART ZERMATT
After a final breakfast this morning, check out of your hotel and use your 8-day Swiss Pass for your onward travel, whether it be to Geneva, Zurich or elsewhere. Romantik Wilden Mann Luzern

The Romantik Hotel Wilden Mann is a traditional hotel with 51 bedrooms and suites set over seven historic Lucerne townhouses. The hotel has two restaurants, fine dining in the Wilden Mann Stube, and the Burgerstube, serving regional Swiss cuisine. The hotel is located in the centre of Lucerne's old town, 200 metres from the famous Chapel Bridge and a few minutes walk to the train station.

The Waldstaetterhof is a modern hotel located in the centre of Lucerne. The hotel offers 78 comfortable ensuite bedrooms all with Wi-Fi internet access and tea & coffee making facilities.
