Trip Overview

The perfect trip for everyone interested in European history, this vacation takes in the medieval splendor of buzzing Brussels, and the First World War battlefields at Ypres and Lille in Northern France. Start in the Belgian capital with its beautiful Grand Place and then take the train to Ypres for a tour of the battlefields and cemeteries of World War I. Then travel back via the pretty town of Lille.

Daily Itinerary:

DAY 1 – ARRIVE IN BRUSSELS
Welcome to Brussels! On arrival, check in at your hotel for a two-night stay. Relax in one of the cafés which line the city's avenues and squares or stroll around one of the many museums. (Overnight in Brussels)

DAY 2 – BRUSSELS
After breakfast use your Hop-On-Hop-Off Pass to visit some of the exhibitions in one of the spheres of the Atomium; Brussels' answer to the Eiffel Tower, or stroll through the Petit Sablon, a small green square that is home to an array of shops and fantastic patisseries. (Overnight in Brussels) B

DAY 3 - BRUSSELS TO YPRES
Travel by train from Brussels to Ypres and upon arrival, check in at your hotel for a two-night stay. During the middle ages, Ypres was a prosperous city, renowned for its linen trade. Today it is synonymous with the battles of the First World War. The main square was rebuilt after the war and is now the first stop for any visit to the city. The imposing Cloth Hall originally built in the 13th Century is now home to the ‘In Flanders Fields Museum' which offers a fascinating and moving history of WW1. (Overnight in Ypres) B

DAY 4 - YPRES
After breakfast this morning at your hotel, continue to discover Ypres. Included in your vacation is a guided visit to the Flanders fields. On a half-day tour, you will visit sites including Hill 60, Bayernwald trench complex, Bedford House Commonwealth cemetery and ANZAC and Canadian sites. End your day at the Menin Gate for the nightly 'Last Post' ceremony which commemorates the fallen Commonwealth soldiers without known graves. (Overnight in Ypres) B

DAY 5 - YPRES TO LILLE
After breakfast this morning, take the train from Ypres to Lille and upon arrival, check in at your hotel for a two-night stay. With a history dating back a thousand years, Lille offers a wealth of attractions. Make use of your 2-day City Pass and visit the Palais de Beaux-Arts, one of the largest art museums in France, or take a trip to the zoo or the lovely botanical gardens. (Overnight in Lille) B

DAY 6 - LILLE
Continue to use your City Pass today and explore Lille's’ vibrant town center, old town with cobbled streets, and fantastic shopping ranging from boutiques and antique shops to the Euralille Centre next to Lille Europe Eurostar terminal. Enjoy wandering around the lively streets, or just relax in one of the many brasseries, cafés and patisseries in the main square. (Overnight in Lille).

DAY 7 – DEPART LILLE
After breakfast this morning, check out of your hotel and continue with your travels. If you wish to extend your vacation, perhaps with an additional day in a different city, one of our Rail Specialists will be happy to assist you with the details. B
