A Day in Provence

Aix en Provence / France / Lille | August 15, 2011

Peter Mayle may have sealed his reputation and fortune following the success of writing “A Year in Provence”. I suspect the same won’t happen to me (and I sadly won’t be making a TV version with John Thaw for several reasons). However, thanks to the wonders of high speed rail, I was able to experience the city of Aix-en-Provence over one weekend away.

Love Lille by James Ruddy

It’s hardly surprising that the locals were not happy with the plaque that was once fixed to the house wall. It said: Adolph Hitler Lived Here. The sign came down a couple of years ago. But there is talk of it going back up again soon. Which just goes to show how even monsters of our own parents’ and grandparents’ lifetimes can fade with memory into items of interest with the passage of time.

A Weekend in Lille

I didn’t know that much about Lille before spending the weekend there. To be honest, it wasn’t somewhere that I had thought about visiting. For the most part I have, shamefully, stuck to European capital cities and places that I have driven through accidently on the way to somewhere else without really knowing their names. After visiting Lille, however, I can see why it’s such a popular destination.
