Enjoy a holiday to Venice including a spectacular journey through the breathtaking scenery of the Gotthard Pass in the Swiss Alps. Start out from London and travel down to Lucerne for an overnight stop. Then plunge through the Swiss Alps along the Gotthard Pass route and emerge in the Swiss canton of Ticino before continuing across the border into Italy and on to Venice, the Queen of the Adriatic. After a 3 night stay, choose either to return by train with a night in Turin or fly home with British Airways.

Itinerary - 4 Night Holiday by Air + Rail

Day 1

London to Lucerne

Take the Eurostar to Paris and then connect onto the high speed TGV Lyria to Basel on the border between France and Switzerland, before catching a local service to Lucerne.

On arrival, check in at the Waldstaetterhof Hotel, situated right next to the station, for an overnight stay.

Lucerne occupies a stunning position overlooking the lake of the same name with some of the highest peaks of the Alps in the distance. Enjoy an evening exploring the lovely Old Town area with its half-timbered houses or lingering over dinner at one of the restaurants along the banks of the River Reuss.

Day 2

Lucerne to Venice

Leave Lucerne early this morning and catch the direct train through the Gotthard Pass high in the Swiss Alps to Venice. Watch the spectacular mountain scenery pass by your window as you travel along one of the most scenic rail routes in Europe. At the end of your journey, cross the lagoon bridge connecting the mainline and Venice Santa Lucia station. Here, disembark and check in to the Ai Mori d' Oriente Hotel for a 3 night stay.

Stretched across 117 islands within the Venetian Lagoon, Venice is unique. Famed for its canals, its history and its ethereal beauty, the city continues to enchant visitors from all over the world, as it has done for centuries.

Days 3 and 4

Venice

Spend two full days exploring the sights of Venice. Famous attractions not to be missed include St Mark's Square with its sumptuous Basilica and imposing Campanile which you can climb for great city views. Also worth visiting is the nearby Doge's Palace, where it's a good idea to take a tour so that you can fully appreciate the history of this stunning building.

Make sure you also spend some time out on the water. Venice Lido has some great sandy beaches and the islands of Murano and Burano are beautifully maintained fishing villages where you can watch the famous Venetian glassblowers in action. These and other sights are accessible by vaporetto or private water taxi.

Day 5

Return to London

Leave Venice today and head to Marco Polo Airport for your British Airways flight back to London in Euro Traveller class.

Lucerne is a picturesque city in the centre of Switzerland, set on Lake Lucerne and offering lovely views of the distant Alps. There is plenty of classic Swiss architecture to see from the half-timbered houses of the Old Town, to the elegant spires of the city’s churches and the medieval wooden bridges, the most famous of which is the Chapel Bridge, originally built in 1333. There is also a great market on Tuesdays and Saturday mornings, set in arcades along the River Reuss.

With its unique atmosphere, Venice has entranced visitors for centuries. Get lost in the winding narrow streets and pretty little campos. You will always end up back at the Grand Canal, with its grand palazzos and distinctive stripped mooring poles. Don’t miss the spectacular St Mark’s Square with its ornate Basilica or the little boutiques on and around the Rialto Bridge.

Turin

The capital of Piedmont in northern Italy, Turin is a cultural city on the River Po with a stunning backdrop of Alpine peaks. Visit one of the city’s world class museums such as the National Cinema Museum and the Museo Egizio, housing the second largest collection of Egyptian artefacts in the world after Cairo. After a busy day exploring make sure you find out what the ‘slow food movement’ is all about with a meal in one of Turin’s huge selection of restaurants.

Itinerary - 5 Night Holiday by Rail

Day 1

London to Lucerne

Take the Eurostar to Paris and then connect onto the high speed TGV Lyria to Basel on the border between France and Switzerland, before catching a local service to Lucerne.

Day 2

Lucerne to Venice

Leave Lucerne early this morning and catch the direct train through the Gotthard Pass high in the Swiss Alps to Venice. Watch the spectacular mountain scenery pass by your window as you travel along one of the most scenic rail routes in Europe. At the end of your journey, cross the lagoon bridge connecting the mainline and Venice Santa Lucia station. Here, disembark and check in to the Ai Mori d' Oriente Hotel for a 3 night stay.

Venice to Turin

Spend another morning in Venice and then catch a train to Turin via Milan. On arrival in Turin, check in at the Starhotels Majestic Turin for your overnight stay.

Enjoy strolling the streets of Turin for an afternoon. Visit one of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Royal Houses of Savoy or wander around one of Turin's many world class museums.

Not only famous for its culture, Turin is renowned for its "slow food" concept and fantastic chocolate. The gianduiotto is the city's most celebrated chocolate sweet is made from a recipe dating back to the 19th century. It is celebrated in Turin's own chocolate festival "Cioccolatò", held every March in Piazza Vittorio Veneto.

Day 6

Turin to London

Leave early this morning and take the high speed TGV train to Paris, heading through the Aosta Valley (look out for glimpses of Mont Blanc). On arrival in Paris, transfer onto the Eurostar service to London.
