Arrive into Switzerland and use your Swiss Rail Pass to travel by train to Zermatt (journey time from Zurich approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes and from Geneva approximately 4 hours). Change in Visp and climb to 5300 ft above sea level along the Mattertal line before arriving at the car free village of Zermatt.
On arrival check-in for 2 nights at the Romantik Hotel Julen Zermatt. This family run hotel in the centre of the village offers very comfortable accommodation, a choice of restaurants and an excellent wellness centre spread over three floors with a spa, swimming pool and fitness room.
Situated at the southern end of the Matter Valley and surrounded by the highest peaks of the Swiss Alps, Zermatt is a traditional alpine village. Spend a day soaking up the scenery. Take one of the many cable cars and chair lifts up into the mountains for skiing or walking, or visit the Matterhorn museum for a history of the surrounding area, including the story of the first ill-fated attempt to scale the Matterhorn in 1865.
After a leisurely breakfast, head to the station and board the panoramic carriages of the Glacier Express, bound for St Moritz. This spectacular 7.5 hour journey runs through 91 tunnels, over 291 bridges and reaches its highest point at the Oberalp Pass, 2033 metres above sea level. Pass glacial streams, alpine meadows, majestic snow-capped peaks and dramatic gorges before crossing the famous Landwasser Viaduct and arriving into St Moritz in the late afternoon.
