Zurich is Switzerland's most cosmopolitan and elegant city, situated on the banks of the River Limmat. The city is home to an impressive number of art galleries and museums, among which are the Swiss National Museum and the Kunsthaus. Spend the evening by the lake in the old town district of Niederdorf, famous for its bars, restaurants, lounges and fashion shops.
After breakfast take the train through the Swiss and Austrian Alps over the Arlberg Pass. This spectacular journey leaves Zurich, travelling along the bank of Lake Zürich before the Alpine scenery starts to come into view. You briefly pass through Liechtenstein before entering Austria. Travel along the Arlberg Pass, through mountain meadows and past stunning Alpine scenery.
On arrival in Salzburg check in for an overnight stay at the Stein Hotel Salzburg
Spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the sights of Salzburg. Head for the old town looking over the Salzach River, with its cobbled streets of little shops and famous hilltop castle, known as the Festung Hohensalzburg.
This morning catch a train from Salzburg via Villach and the Semmering Pass to Vienna. Soon after Salzburg, the train enters the Austrian Alps, climbing through epic mountain scenery. Look out for the magnificent fortress at Werfen (although the train doesn't call here), perched on a hilltop on the right hand side, en route to Villach along the Salzachtal valley. As you emerge from the Semmering Tunnel you will get a close view of mountain peaks with the valley floor thousands of feet below. Around an hour later, your service pulls in to Vienna Matzleindorf station.
On arrival, check in at the K & K Hotel Palais Vienna for a 3 night stay.
After settling in to your hotel, why not begin your exploration of Vienna with an evening at the opera or one of the many nightly concerts that take place in the city?
Spend two full days in Austria's imperial capital city.
Visit iconic Viennese attractions such as the Ringstrasse, the Sacher Café, the Spanish Riding School, the Hofburg Palace and St Stephan’s Cathedral.
Alternatively, why not spend some time visiting Vienna's imperial residences like the Belvedere and Schonbrunn Palaces or wandering around the city's fascinating museums? Highly recommended is a walk along the Danube to the colourful and eccentric Kunsthaus, designed by local architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
After a last morning in Vienna, fly with British Airways in Euro Traveller class back to London.
