Discover the beauty of the Rhine River as you travel past picturesque hilltop castles and rolling vineyards on this 8 night scenic holiday by rail. Travel to Koblenz for an overnight stay before making your way along the banks of the Rhine, stopping off in the beautiful towns of Rudesheim, Heidelberg and Lindau. Continue through the mountain meadows and stunning mountain scenery of the Arlberg pass as you head to Innsbruck for a 2 night stay. Finish with a night in the Bavarian city of Munich and continue by train back to London.

Itinerary - 8 Night Holiday by Rail

Day 1

London to Koblenz

Travel from St Pancras International or Ebbsfleet International by Eurostar to Brussels and then connect on to the German ICE train to Cologne. Journey time from London is approximately 4 hours.

Once in Cologne, continue by train along the Rhine Valley, past hilltop castles and vineyards from Cologne to Koblenz. On arrival in Koblenz, check in at the GHotel & Living Koblenz for an overnight stay.

Day 2

Koblenz to Heidelberg

Included in your itinerary is a KD Rhine Pass from Koblenz. This pass gives you the opportunity to cruise along this scenic river and admire the Rhine Valley with its numerous beautiful castles and verdant vineyards. Use the KD Rhine Pass to travel by boat from Koblenz to Rudesheim before continuing by train along the Rhine to Heidelberg.

On arrival in Heidelberg, check in at the Crowne Plaza Heidelberg for a 2 night stay.

In the evening, head to the Old Town to try some traditional food in one of the many restaurants that Heidelberg has to offer.

Day 3

Heidelberg

Spend a second day at leisure in Heidelberg.

Heidelberg is famous for its beautiful old castle which dominates the skyline and overlooks the old town. Climb the steps to the top for incredible views of the Gothic Old Town from the castle's hilltop location.

Go for a stroll around the Old Town, relax on the Neckarwiese whilst enjoying the River Neckar views, take a trip to Heidelberg Zoo or visit St. Peter's Church. Alternatively, why not browse the stalls at the Neuenheim market or visit one of Heidelburg’s museums such as the Museum of Ancient Art.

Days 4 and 5

Lindau

Enjoy breakfast in the hotel and spend the morning in Heidelberg before travelling by train to Lindau. On arrival in Lindau, check in at the Hotel Reutemann Seegarten for a 2 night stay.

Located in a stunning island location on Lake Constance, Lindau is a picturesque Bavarian town which has been inhabited since Roman times.

Lindau is famous for its iconic harbour, which is considered to be the most attractive harbour on Lake Constance. Visit the lion monument which looks out over the lake or simply admire the picturesque views from a harbourside bar. Wander around the Lindau Town Museum, visit the Town Hall or go for a stroll through the Old Town area with its beautiful architecture.

Day 6

Lindau to Innsbruck

Spend the morning in Lindau before taking the scenic train journey to Innsbruck. Travel along the Arlberg Pass, through mountain meadows and past the stunning scenery of the Austrial Tyrol as you head towards Innsbruck. On arrival in Innsbruck, check in at the Hilton Innsbruck for a 2 night stay.

Surrounded by snowcapped mountains, Innsbruck has gained a reputation as an impressive Austrian holiday destination due to its fantastic winter sporting events and impressive historical monuments. Don’t miss a trip by funicular railway to the Olympic ski jump for spectacular city views!

Day 7

Innsbruck

Spend a second day at leisure in Innsbruck.

Wander around the old town, taking in the famous Goldenes Dach (Golden Roof), the Imperial Church with its striking memorial to Emperor Maximillian I or the Stadtturm for great views of the city.

In the evening, indulge in some local cuisine such as lobster ragout and Apfelstrudel.

Day 8

Innsbruck to Munich

After breakfast in the hotel take the scenic train from Innsbruck to Munich. The train passes through the historic market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. On arrival in Munich, check in at the Courtyard Munich City Centre for a 1 night stay.

Marvel at the architecture of the Marienplatz, visit the largest cathedral in the city, the Frauenkirche and uncover the legend behind the Teufelsschritt (Devil’s Footstep), take a tour of the renowned Deutsches Museum or relax in the beautiful Englischer Garten, one of the largest urban parks in the world.

No visit to Munich is complete without a visit to a beer hall. The Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is undoubtedly the most famous of these, where you can sample some weisswürste (white sausage) or schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) with your mass (litre glass) of beer.

Day 9

Munich to London

After breakfast, travel by high speed train through Germany to Brussels. Once in Brussels, travel by Eurostar back to London. Stopovers enroute are available; please call for details.

Koblenz

Koblenz

Koblenz is situated at the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) where the confluences of the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet. Its idyllic location as well as the wealth of castles, palaces and other well preserved buildings makes this a wonderful place to explore. Wander through the narrow streets and pretty squares of the Old Town. Cross the river to visit the Ehrenbreitstein fortress or simply walk along the riverfront, admiring the views.

Heidelberg

Heidelberg is famous for its beautiful old castle which dominates the skyline and overlooks the pretty Baroque Old Town. Walk along the Philosphenweg (or Philosopher’s Walk), offering great views of the city from across the river or discover some of Heidelberg’s historic churches. Don’t miss a trip on the Heidelberger Bergbahn funicular to the Königstuhl for spectacular views over the city and castle.

Lindau

Lindau

Located in a stunning island location on Lake Constance, Lindau is a picturesque Bavarian town which has been inhabited since Roman times. The town is connected to the mainland via a road bridge and of course, a railway line. Discover the historic architecture of the Old Town and one of Europe's loveliest harbours where you can enjoy a drink or a meal and watch the boats setting sail out onto the Bodensee.

Innsbruck is the capital of the Austrian Tyrol, surrounded by high Alpine mountains and divided by the fast flowing River Inn. The city is perfect for exploring on foot as most of its attractions are located in the Altstadt including the famous Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof), the Domkirke and the Hofburg. Don’t miss a trip by funicular railway to the Olympic ski jump for spectacular city views.

Munich

With a wealth of museums, gardens and historic buildings, Bavaria’s capital Munich has something for everyone. Visit the Old and New Schliessheim Palaces, enjoy a performance at the Bavarian State Opera or have a picnic in the Englischer Garten, one of the largest municipal parks in Europe. In the evening, you might like to relax with a beer and a Bavarian meal in the famous 16th century Hofbräuhaus.
