Itinerary - 4 Night Holiday by Rail

Day 1

Travel to Interlaken

Take the Eurostar from London to Paris, where you transfer to the Gare de Lyon for the high speed TGV train through eastern France all the way to Basel in Switzerland. Once in Basel change onto the direct train to Interlaken in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

Check in to the Hotel du Nord, where you will stay overnight.

One of the oldest and most popular resorts in Switzerland, Interlaken provides an excellent base for exploring the beauty of the surrounding area. Interlaken is located between two lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and offers fantastic views of the magnificent Jungfrau Mountains.

Day 2

Jungfraujoch Excursion

In the morning you take the scenic railway up the Jungfrau mountain via Lauterbrunnen. Once at the top you are at the highest train station in Europe at 3454 metres above sea level. This is a unique journey which takes you on a cog railway to Kleine Scheidegg before climbing to Jungfraujoch, where you have incredible views (on a clear day) over the Vosges Mountains in France and the Black Forest in Germany.

Travel back down the Jungfraujoch via Kleine Scheidegg and the traditional mountain village of Grindelwald for your second night at the du Nord Hotel.

Four day Swiss Pass Included. You have a four day Swiss Pass included in your holiday which entitles you to unlimited travel on boats and trains as well as free public transport in Interlaken and Lucerne.

Day 3

Golden Pass Line to Lucerne

After breakfast you travel on the scenic Golden Pass Line to Lucerne. The Golden Pass train travels alongside the shores of five lakes, before climbing up to the Brünig Pass and eventualy ending in historic Lucerne.

Check in to the Waldstaetterhof Hotel, where you will stay overnight.

After checking in to the hotel you have time to spend the afternoon in charming Lucerne. You can explore the old town's classical Swiss architecture, including the stunning Baroque Jesuit church and the medieval Chapel Bridge. Or just enjoy the waterfront by hiring a bike or wandering along the elegant promenade.

Day 4

Mount Pilatus Excursion

After a short boat cruise from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, the steepest rack railway in the World will take you to Mount Pilatus. The cog-train runs from June to September and during the winter months a postal coach will take you from Lucerne to Kriens and from there a gondola awaits to take you to Pilatus. The views from the top offer a breathtaking Alpine panorama, which can be enjoyed from one of the mountain top restaurants. As well as the spectacular vistas from the top there is also central Switzerland's biggest suspension rope park and the longest taboggan run in Switzerland.

Travel back from Mount Pilatus for your second night at the Waldstatterhof hotel.

Day 5

Lucerne to London

After a morning in Lucerne, take the train to Basel before connecting on to the high speed TGV Lyria train to Paris and then home on the Eurostar.

Railbookers recommends

  • Why not extend your holiday with extra night in Lucerne or a stopover in the elegant city of Basel, on the River Rhine.

Interlaken

Interlaken

Located in a valley and between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, Interlaken is an excellent base to explore Switzerland. Sail on either of the two lakes, paraglide from the nearby mountains and enjoy spectacular views of the Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönsch peaks or, if you'd rather keep two feet on the ground, simply take a funicular railway line up the Harder, where you can enjoy the mountain views over lunch.

Lucerne

Lucerne

Lucerne is a picturesque city in the centre of Switzerland, set on Lake Lucerne and offering lovely views of the distant Alps. There is plenty of classic Swiss architecture to see from the half-timbered houses of the Old Town, to the elegant spires of the city’s churches and the medieval wooden bridges, the most famous of which is the Chapel Bridge, originally built in 1333. There is also a great market on Tuesdays and Saturday mornings, set in arcades along the River Reuss.
