Fly from London to Delhi with British Airways and transfer to Safdarjung Railway station. Board the sumptuous Palace on Wheels luxury train in the mid afternoon and settle into your private compartment. Your luggage is taken to your respective saloons and you are greeted with a traditional garland and glass of wine.
Meet with your fellow passengers, explore your new home and settle down with a drink in the bar before a lavish dinner is served in the Maharaja and Mararani restaurants.
Arrive in Jaipur, known as the "Pink City" and capital of the semi-desert region of Rajhastan. Discover the incredible Hawa Mahal Palace followed by the Jantar Mantar-Astronomical Observatory, now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend your free time shopping for unique handicrafts including wonderful carvings, semi-precious gems and blue pottery. Jaipur is also renowned for its incredible hand block textile printing.
Stop for lunch at Jaipur's most celebrated sight, the Amber Fort. Enjoy an elephant ride before exploring the Fort's wondrous fusion of architectural styles combining Rajput and Mugal. Take a walk through the Jai Mandir Hall, adorned with glass panels lining the ceiling.
In the evening, travel to a 5* hotel for a delicious dinner before returning to the Palace on Wheels.
Arrive in Sawai Madhopur, home to the Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve and a haven of natural, historical beauty. The Ranthambhore Fort, which is a thousand years old, stands tall above the reserve and contains cenotaphs, tombs and stunning summer palaces. The unique flora and fauna can be seen across azure lakes and majestic forests.
Spotting a tiger in this dynamic environment is tough, however the numerous animals within the Reserve will ensure an entertaining day. Indian Gazelle, Jackal, Wild Boar and Sloth bears are just a few of the endless species that you might see here.
Enjoy lunch on board as the train twists and turns through Chittorgarh's lush green fields. Visit Chittorgarh's fort, considered the largest in India and built between the 5th and 8th century. The Golden City of Rajasthan awaits today with a early arrival to Jaisalmer. Founded in 1156AD, Jaisalmer has an ancient history as a central trading centre at the heart of the route between Persia, Africa and the West. Study the impressive Sonar Quila Fort and the Havelie Mansions incorporating traditional décor and ancient architecture.
Shop for goods and enjoy typical Rajasthani fare at the Moomal Hotel. In the evening, enjoy the striking sunset with a camel ride across the rolling sand dunes and a wonderful campfire dinner.
On arrival in Jodhpur, visit the city's mighty hilltop fort (The Mehrangarh Fort) built in 1459 and standing 120 metres high. This commanding structure includes intricate sculptures, beautiful Rajput paintings and wonderful stone carvings. Lunch at the gorgeous Bhawan Palace before visiting the Umaid Bhawan Palace.
This palace holds huge significance and is arguably the world's finest and largest palace. Built by an Edwardian architect, the palace has 347 rooms with incredible décor and a central dome which is a staggering 110 feet high.
After dinner at a 5* star hotel, return back to the train for a night cap in the bar before retiring to your suite.
Today, the Royal Kingdom of Bharatpur awaits. Ruled by the Jats, the Kingdom's exploits are legendary and the Iron Fort is a historical symbol, built with bastions of mud which allowed cannon shells to be swallowed without any effect.
Enjoy breakfast at the Keoladeo Ghana National Park where one of the finest bird sanctuaries has been developed. Over 300 species from all over the world live here.
From Bharatpur, travel to Agra for your final, and most significant visit to the Taj Mahal. Fondly known as the "Pink City" due to its brilliantly bright architecture, Jaipur is the largest city of Rajasthan. Once a royal capital, Jaipur features a remarkable Palace Quarter, the Nahargarh Fort, home to King Sawai Jai Singh II and the Jantar Mantar observatory. The Amber Fort is another magnificent structure of the city and Jaipur is famous for its handicrafts - notably silver jewellery, blue pottery and block printing.
Udaipur is famous as the "City of Lakes" and commonly nicknamed the "Venice of the East". The Lake Palace is an amazing structure which covers the entire island in the Pichola Lake and the Monsoon Palace is the summer resort of the Maharajas.
Home to several impressive palaces and temples, Jaisalmer is heralded as the "Golden City" due to its location within the sandunes. Jaisalmer's medieval mud fortress, the Sonar Quila Fort is a popular tourist destination offering fantastic views across the desert. Jaisalmer also features some of the world's oldest libraries containing rare manuscripts and artefacts of Jain tradition.
The former capital of the Marwar, Jodhpur is stunning city full of indigo coloured houses set within the Thar desert. The "Blue City" boasts the impressive Mehrangarh Fort, built by Rao Jodha in 1459 and standing on a rocky hill, 120 metres above the city.
Delhi, the second largest metropolis in India and capital of the country is a vibrant city brimming with history and culture. Believed to have been inhabited since 1000 BC, Delhi is now home to over 1200 heritage buildings including Jama Masjid (India's Largest Mosque), the impressive Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb.
The Palace on Wheels luxury train is one of the most exciting rail journeys due to its fantastic on-board facilities; fascinating Royal destinations visited every day and professional staff happy to ensure your trip is perfect. The gleaming carriage is made of 14 saloons, each equipped with 2 double bedded chambers. Every Wednesday the Palace on Wheels departs Safdarjung Railway station New Delhi for a week long adventure through Rajasthan. The train travels by night ensuring you arise to a dazzling new destination each morning.
Each of the 14 chambers includes a separate bathroom with hot and cold running water and showers. They are equipped with comfortable furnishings, cosy sofas, relaxing lighting, and huge glass windows to enjoy the stunning scenery pass by. Inbuilt wardrobes are available to store bags and clothing. Cabins also included a well stocked bar, television, wall to wall carpeting and music channel.
On board, guests are invited to soak up the scenery, enjoy the wonderful service and relax as you experience the lifestyle of a Maharaja. Each coach has a seating lounge where guests can enjoy a soothing cup of tea and discuss the day with their fellow travellers. The Bar/Lounge has a small library where guests can relax with some traditional literature or enjoy a drink before dinner. The two restaurants cars, Maharaja and Maharani are opulently decorated with impressive drapes and luxurious furnishings. The cuisine is a wonderful blend of Indian (including Rajasthani), continental and many other mouth-watering cuisines.
Indoor games such as cards, chinese checkers, chess and a traditional Indian carom board are available aboard the train. First aid is available on the train and a doctor can be arranged on call at every station. Purified drinking water is onboard throughout the journey. Adequate security is provided and essential toiletries are included in each bathroom.
