Itinerary - 7 Night Holiday by Rail

Day 1

London to Basel

Travel by Eurostar from London St Pancras, Ebbsfleet or Ashford to Paris and change onto the TGV Lyria line to Basel, arriving in the early evening. Check in at the Swissotel Le Plaza Basel for an overnight stay.

Basel is a cosmopolitan city with suburbs in France and Germany. Spend an evening wandering through the cobbled streets of the Old Town and enjoying the city's vibrant café and restaurant culture.

Day 2

Basel to Lugano

Spend another morning in Basel before catching the train to Lugano. The route of this journey goes through Lucerne and the stunning Gotthard Pass high in the Alps before descending into the Italian speaking Swiss Canton of Ticino.

On arrival in Lugano, check in to the International au Lac Hotel Lugano for a 4 night stay.

Lugano is an easily walkable (if steeply gradiented) town and there's a handy funicular railway leading down from the station to the main centre and lakefront. Spend the evening exploring the Old Town and strolling along the palm-fringed boulevards around Lake Lugano.

Days 3 to 5

Lake Lugano

Enjoy three full days to explore this beautiful area.

Lugano itself has plenty to offer, from designer boutiques to historic churches and some great museums. Visit the Museo Cantonale d'Arte featuring works by Renoir, Degas and Kandinsky amongst others or take a look at San Lorenzo Cathedral, built in the Middle Ages and featuring beautiful frescoes and Gothic artefacts.

Out of town, why not take a funicular up to one of Lake Lugano's peaks such as Monte San Salvatore or Monte Bré both of which offer fabulous views of the area? At the foot of Monte Bré is the unspoilt lakeside village of Gandria with lovely, narrow car-free streets.

Day 6

Lugano to Turin

After breakfast this morning, head back to the station for your onward journey to Turin via Milan. Arrive in Turin in the early afternoon and check in at the Starhotels Majestic Turin for a 2 night stay.

Spend your afternoon in Turin discovering the city’s royal history and majestic piazzas, the most impressive being Piazza Castello, home to grand palaces such as the Palazzo Madama and the Palazzo Reale.

Day 7

Turin

Spend a full day enjoying the sights of Turin.

With your two night stay here you receive a Torino & Piedmonte card, giving you unlimited access to the city's public transport and free entry to some great attractions including the Museo Egizio, offering the world's largest collection of Egyptian antiquities outside Cairo and the Museo Nationale del Cinema, housed in the landmark Mole Antonelliana building.

Also worth seeing are the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, a collection of historic palaces which have collectively been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Day 8

Turin to London

Make an early start this morning for your TGV service from Turin Porta Susa station back to Paris. On arrival at Paris Gare de Lyon, cross to the Gare du Nord for a return Eurostar or why not allow extra time in the French capital for lunch before making your way home?

One of the most cultural cities in Switzerland, Basel is also the most linguistically diverse, thanks in part to its position on the border of France and Germany. Explore the historic streets of the romantic Old Town, visit the imposing red sandstone Cathedral or take in one of Basel’s great choice of museums including the Museum of Cultures, just off the lovely Münsterplatz which offers one of Europe’s largest collections of artefacts related to world ethnography.

Lugano is a charming Swiss town with a real Italian flavour, surrounded by stunning Alpine scenery. Explore the historic centre with its wealth of churches, museums and art galleries such as the Museo Cantonale d’Arte or take the scenic funicular railway to the nearby mountain of Sant Salvatore for spectacular views over Lake Lugano. Or why not take a scenic boat trip out onto the lake? You can also get here via the beautiful scenery of the Wilhelm Tell Express from Lucerne.

The capital of Piedmont in northern Italy, Turin is a cultural city on the River Po with a stunning backdrop of Alpine peaks. Visit one of the city’s world class museums such as the National Cinema Museum and the Museo Egizio, housing the second largest collection of Egyptian artefacts in the world after Cairo. After a busy day exploring make sure you find out what the ‘slow food movement’ is all about with a meal in one of Turin’s huge selection of restaurants.
