Itinerary - 7 Night Holiday by Rail

Day 1

London to Basel

Travel on the Eurostar to Paris, where you transfer onto the famous TGV to Basel (journey time 3 hours). On arrival in Basel, check in at the Swissotel Le Plaza Basel for an overnight stay.

With the River Rhine curving through it, Basel is a beautiful and historic city which spans three national borders. Pay a visit to the Romanesque Cathedral and Renaissance Town Hall, explore one of the forty museums which are dotted around the city or sample some Basel specialities such as Mehlsuppe (brown flour soup) or Zwiebelwähe (onion tart) in one of the Old Town’s great selection of restaurants.

Day 2

Basel to Weggis

Enjoy breakfast in the hotel before travelling by train to Lucerne. Once in Lucerne transfer onto a boat which takes you to the picturesque lakeside town of Weggis. On arrival in Weggis in the early afternoon, check in at the Beau Rivage Weggis for a 5 night stay on Lake Lucerne.

The beautiful village of Weggis is situated in a quiet bay on Lake Lucerne, nestled at the foot of Mount Rigi.

This afternoon, why not relax in the hotel lakeside spa after your journey? The spa features a heated swimming pool and wellness area with crystal-salt whirlpool, aroma steam-bath and solarium.

Days 3 to 6

Weggis and Lake Lucerne

Spend the next four days at leisure in the stunning surroundings of Weggis and Lake Lucerne.

Take advantage of Weggis's spectacular lakeside setting with a walk along one of the resort's palm-fringed promenades. There are also plenty of boat excursions heading out on to the lake itself.

Alternatively, why not take a steamboat from the Lake to Vitznau and travel on the cog railway, which was Europe's first-ever mountain railway, up to Mount Rigi for panoramic views of the surrounding area?

Day 7

Weggis to Cologne

After a leisurely start today, travel by boat to Lucerne and continue by train to Cologne. On arrival in Cologne, check in at the Hilton Cologne for an overnight stay.

Cologne is Germany's oldest city and is famed for the iconic spires of its Dom Cathedral.

Explore the narrow, cobbled streets of the Old Town area with its historic Town Hall. Enjoy a tasting at the Chocolate Museum, go for a stroll along the Rhine River, or relax with a glass of Kolsch, the local specialty beer. Head to the top of the Cathedral for fabulous views over the city, shop for gifts along the famous Hohe Strasse or visit the Ludwig Museum which is devoted to modern art.

Day 8

Cologne to London

Spend the morning discovering more of Cologne before travelling by train to Brussels. Once in Brussels, connect onto the Eurostar back to London.

Basel

One of the most cultural cities in Switzerland, Basel is also the most linguistically diverse, thanks in part to its position on the border of France and Germany. Explore the historic streets of the romantic Old Town, visit the imposing red sandstone Cathedral or take in one of Basel’s great choice of museums including the Museum of Cultures, just off the lovely Münsterplatz which offers one of Europe’s largest collections of artefacts related to world ethnography.

Weggis

Weggis

With a palm fringed lake and a mild, south facing climate, Weggis is often referred to as the ‘Riviera of Central Switzerland’. Explore the beauty of Lake Lucerne with a boat cruise or a walk along its shores. You can also head up to the peak of nearby Mount Rigi via the Vitznau-Rigi cog railway line for spectacular views. Other convenient daytrips from here include the lovely city of Lucerne and the Titlis rotating cable-car which takes you 10,000 feet up to the Titlis glacier.

Cologne

Cologne

Cologne is a famous city along the River Rhine, whose skyline is dominated by its awe-inspiring Gothic Cathedral, one of the largest of its kind. Climb the south tower for spectacular views over the city and the river. There are also plenty of museums here including the Römisch-Germanisches Museum, offering an interesting history of the Rhine during Roman times and the Chocolate Museum, a must for chocoholics.
