From $9,016 per person
On arrival in Bangkok you are transferred to Bangkok's Central Station. Step aboard the gleaming carriages of the Eastern and Oriental Express. Experience a true Thai welcome as the stewards greet you with a gracious "wai", the traditional hello. Enjoy a refreshing drink as you settle in to your private, luxurious cabin. As the whistle blows, wave goodbye to Bangkok and embark on your journey into the glorious countryside. Enjoy a welcome cocktail reception and a great opportunity to meet your fellow travellers. In the evening, make your way to one of the opulent dining cars to enjoy fine Asian cuisine and perhaps have your fortune told by the onboard astrologer.
After a sumptuous breakfast, your guide will escort you to a traditional Isan village to take part in a walking tour and to meet the local people. Discover traditional Isan customs and visit temples, schools and conventional methods of working, such as local women weaving "matmee" cloth or bamboo mats. Learn the process of rice cultivation and participate in the age old "bai sli" ceremony. Performed by the village elders, this prestigious ceremony symbolises friendship and provides a very moving experience that few are lucky enough to witness.
Return to the Eastern and Oriental Express for lunch as you travel through rural landscapes to Sikhoraphum. Visit the Prasat Sikhoraphum, a stunning 12th Century Khmer temple with beautiful views and perfect for a sunset cocktail reception. Return to the train in time to relax before dinner as you head onwards to Phanom Rung.
This morning, visit Phanom Rung, another of Thailand's majestic Khmer temples, nominated for World Heritage status. Marvel at the stone carvings of ancient legends before visiting a village renowned for its silk weavers. After observing them at work, return to the Eastern and Oriental Express where the remainder of the day is yours to enjoy. Sit back and relax as the countryside rolls by and you journey to Chiang Mai. Lunch and dinner are served aboard the train all consisting of fresh local produce and entertainment is provided throughout the evening.
Arrive in Chiang Mai, the northern province of Thailand and home to the ancient Lanna Kingdom. Choose from an array of excursions such as the elephant camp, a tour of Chiang Mai's famous Buddhist temples or a relaxing afternoon shopping at some of the best boutiques for handmade crafts to take home. Sample a traditional Lanna style lunch before re-boarding the train.
Following a leisurely breakfast, arrive in Lampang. Explore this fascinating city in style - in a trademark pony carriage. Originally imported from England these delightful carts were originally used by the Thai nobility and provide a wonderful method to explore the city. Conclude your trip at Ban Sao Nok (House of Many Pillars), formerly a house built on 116 pillars but transformed into a museum for guests to appreciate the history of the area. Enjoy a refreshing afternoon tea in the gardens before returning to the Eastern and Oriental Express. After lunch, visit the Observation Car for spectacular views before enjoying a cocktail with dinner and retiring to bed.
Begin the day with a trip to Thailand's oldest reserve, Khao Yai National Park. Join your expert naturalist guide to discover a world of wildlife such as elephants, gibbons, birds and lizards. Take a comfortable hike through the charming trails and learn about the unique flora that this park grows. Travel to Gran Monte, where you can sample some of Thailand's finest wine at one of the most celebrated vineyards. Enjoy lunch within the grounds before heading back to the Eastern and Oriental Express.
Bid a fond goodbye to your fellow passengers and new friends with a "farewell" cocktail party. Reminisce on the previous days aboard one of the most prestigious trains in the world and delight in Thailand's fascinating history and culture.
Arrive early morning to Thailand's capital. Take time to shop or sightsee in this vibrant city or simply relax before heading home with plenty of memories.
We can book accommodation in Bangkok for you at the start and end of the journey. We can also book flights from London to Bangkok and from Bangkok to London for you. Please ask one of our travel consultants for prices and details.
