Step aboard the historic wood paneled coaches of this private train for your luxury trip from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania through the Rift Valley to Cape Town in South Africa.
From $10,643 per person
Today your journey through Southern Africa begins, when your train rolls out of the large TAZARA train station of Dar es Salaam. Settle comfortably into your Deluxe Suite and enjoy the amazing landscapes unfold. As you travel through Africa’s largest game reserve Selous, look out for herds of game. At the train station of Kisaki you can also often see Massai warriors. In the evening enjoy a delicious three course dinner in restaurant carriage.
Spend your day observing the beauty of Tanzania from the Observation Car, enjoying an educational lecture from the onboard historian or sipping tea in the cosy lounge. Pass through typical African savannah, with enormous forests full with thorn trees, Boababs and hundreds of bush varieties. After dinner, arrive in Mbeya, a historic gold town and a hub for the TAZARA railway line.
The TAZARA or "Freedom" railway line was an original idea of the People's Republic of China. Over 75,000 workers took five years to build the line which strengthened relationships between countries and re-ignited Cecil Rhodes’ dream of a Cape to Cairo rail journey.
The railway line rises steadily uphill until your train reaches the volcanic mountain chain of Mbeya. Your train will take you on a breathtaking route through the Rift Valley into Zambia winding along steep slopes, passing through 23 tunnels and crossing countless bridges.
In the morning you will reach the border to Zambia at Tunduma and travel through Northern Zambia’s vast uninhabited bush land plateau at an altitude of about 1,300 metres. Disembark the train for an afternoon excursion to the incredible Chisimba Falls. After sunset you can view the fascinating starry sky of the southern hemisphere.
Today is yours to unwind on the train and appreciate the sights and sounds of the Zambian landscape. The train slowly elevates to heights of 1220 metres above sea level. Pass rock formations, rolling hills and deep valleys as you travel through the African Rift System and watch the Zambezi river flow by. Pass by Serenhe, where David Livingston gave his heart to Africa. His devoted servants carried him back to England where his body now lays to rest in Westminster Abbey.
This morning, in Kapiri Mposhi, the train switches from the TAZARA line to the old colonial train tracks that were intended to be extended all the way to Cairo. The train travels via the capital Lusaka and the Kafue River before reaching the fertile Batoka-Plateau. Lectures will be provided along the way with fascinating insights into the history and landscapes of your journey. Pass Lusaka, the original capital of Northern Rhodesia, built on an enormous limestone plateau.
In the morning you will reach Livingstone, which was capital of Northern Rhodesia until 1935. After a short looping ride the train travels over the spectacular Victoria Falls Bridge connecting Zambia with Zimbabwe, where you have a short stop. After crossing the border, your train rolls into the small train station of Victoria Falls. A two hour bus ride will take you across the border of Botswana, where you will stay at the idyllic 5* Victoria Falls hotel, situated on the Chobe River. At sunset you will take a boat ride along the river where elephants, hippos, antelopes and birds gather in the evening.
Today you enjoy a game drive through the Chobe-National Park. During brunch on the terrace of the lodge, marvel at the beautiful views before returning by bus to Victoria Falls. Take a breathtaking helicopter ride across the falls, a once in a lifetime white water rafting trip along the rapids or ride an African elephant for a fabulous up-close experience of nature's most powerful animals. Watch the "smoke that thunders" as the sun rises beneath the mist and have dinner on the hotel's terrace, boasting wonderful views of famous Victoria Falls bridge.
Through Matabele Land into the Kalahari you will pass through Bulawayo, capital of the Matabele province. Cecil Rhodes’ grave can be found not far from here. There will be an onboard lecture devoted to his life. In the afternoon you will reach the border of Botswana. Your journey will take you past the Tropic of Capricorn into the wide plains of the Kalahari.
In the late morning your train will reach Gabarone, capital of Botswana where you then cross the South African border by bus. You now have two days to discover the wildlife in the Madikwe game reserve. South Africa’s fourth largest game reserve covers 76,000 hectares of game-rich bush and grass plains. You will stay for two nights in the luxurious 5* Tau Game Lodge
On the 11th day you will drive to the small town of Zeerust, where your friendly train staff will welcome you back onboard Rovos Rail.
Your train is pulled on the last few kilometres by an original, lavishly restored steam locomotive. You arrive at Capital Park station in Pretoria where you can see the train workshop. Afterwards a sightseeing tour of Pretoria will conclude your day including visits of the Union buildings and the residential house of Paul Kruger, the former president of the Transvaal Republic.
Before your arrival in Kimberley you will see a great spectacle - tens of thousands of flamingos flocking around a small lake. Shortly before noon your private train will reach the historical train station of Kimberley, the city of diamonds. At the end of the 19th century, the area experienced a huge diamond rush and this famously launched the diamond empire of De Beers. You can view the famous Big Hole, once the largest diamond mine in the world and visit Kimberley’s lovingly restored belle epoque buildings. In the afternoon your train will depart for the last great leg of the journey. Enjoy your farewell dinner as the sun dips behind the vast expanses of the Karoo half-desert.
In the morning your train will reach the small Victorian village of Matjiesfontein where you will have time to visit the railway museum and the venerable Lord Milner Hotel. After your train has passed the Hex River Mountains you will now see South Africa's vineyards. In the late afternoon you reach Cape Town. It’s time to say goodbye to your train crew and new friends before disembarking the "Pride of Africa" for the final time with memories to treasure forever.

Today your journey through Southern Africa begins, when your train rolls out of the large TAZARA train station of Dar Es Salaam. Settle comfortably into your Royal Suite and enjoy the amazing landscapes unfold. As you travel through Africa’s largest game reserve Selous, look out for herds of game. At the train station of Kisaki you can also often view Massai warriors. In the evening enjoy a delicious 3-course dinner in restaurant carriage.
Spend your day observing the beauty of Tanzania from the Observation Car, enjoying an educational lecture from the on board historian or sipping tea in the cosy lounge. Pass through typical African savannah, with enormous forests brimming with thorn trees, Boababs and hundreds of bush varieties. After dinner, arrive in Mbeya, a historic gold town and a hub for the TAZARA railway line.
The TAZARA or "Freedom" railway line was an original idea of the People's Republic of China. Over 75,000 workers took 5 years to build the line which strengthened relationships between countries and re-ignited Cecil Rhodes dream of a Cape to Cairo rail journey.
The train slowly elevates to heights of 1220ms above sea level. Pass by rock formations, rolling hills and deep valleys as you journey through the African Rift System and watch the Zambezi river flow softly by. Pass by Serenhe, where David Livingston gave his heart to Africa. His devoted servants carried him back to England where his body now lays to rest in Westminster Abbey.
This morning, in Kapiri Mposhi, the train switches from the TAZARA line to the old colonial train tracks that were intended to be extended until Cairo. The train travels via the capital Lusaka and the Kafue River before reaching the fertile Batoka-Plateau. Lectures will be provided along the way with fascinating insights into the history and landscape of your journey. Pass by Lusaka, the original capital of Northern Rhodesia and built on an enormous limestone plateau.
In the morning you will reach Livingstone, which was capital of Northern Rhodesia until 1935. After a short, curvy ride the train travels over the spectacular Victoria Falls Bridge connecting Zambia with Zimbabwe, where you have a short stop. After crossing the border, your train gently rolls into the small train station of Victoria Falls. After a two hour bus ride you will cross the border of Botswana, where you will reside at the idyllic 5* Victoria Falls situated on the Chobe River.
Take a breathtaking helicopter ride across the falls, a once in a lifetime white water rafting trip along the rapids or hop aboard an African elephant for a fabulous experience aboard one of nature's most powerful animals. Watch the "smoke that thunders" as the sun rises beneath the mist and have dinner on the hotel's terrace, boasting wonderful views of famous Victoria Falls bridge, connecting Zimbabwe with Zambia.
Through Matabele Land into the Kalahari you will pass through Bulawayo, capital of the Matabele province. Not far from here Cecil Rhodes’ grave can be found. An on board lecture will be devoted to his life. In the afternoon you will reach the border of Botswana. Your journey will take you past the Tropic of Capricorn into the wide plains of the Kalahari.
In the late morning your train will reach Gabarone, capital of Botswana. For two days you will be off the train and you cross the South African border by bus. You now have two days to discover the wildlife in the Madikwe game reserve. South Africa’s fourth largest game reserve covers 76,000 hectares of game-rich bush and grass plains. You will stay for two nights in a luxurious 5* Tau Game Lodge
On the 11th day you will drive to the small town of Zeerust, where your friendly train staff will welcome you back on board of Rovos Rail.
Your train is pulled on the last kilometres by an original, lavishly restored steam locomotive. You arrive at Capital Park station in Pretoria where you can see the train workshop. Afterwards a sightseeing tour of Pretoria will conclude your day including visits of the Union buildings and the residential house of Paul Kruger, the former president of the Transvaal Republic.
Before your arrival in Kimberley you will witness a real wonder of nature: tens of thousands of flamingos will appear like a giant pink band on the banks of a small lake. Shortly before noon your private train will reach the historical train station of Kimberley, the city of diamonds. At the end of the 19th century, the town experienced a real diamond rush, from which the diamond empire of De Beers emerged. You can view the famous Big Hole, once the largest diamond mine in the world and visit Kimberley’s lovingly restored belle epoque buildings. In the afternoon your train will depart for the last great leg of the journey. Enjoy your farewell dinner as the sun dips behind the fascinating Karoo half-desert into red evening light.
Now it’s time to say good-bye to your train crew and new friends before disembarking the "Pride of Africa" for the final time but with memories to treasure forever.
