Itinerary - 13 Night Luxury Holiday by Rail - Pullman Suite

Day 1

Arrive in Cape Town and Board the Rovos Rail

Arrive in the Mother City, Cape Town and depart on your African adventure from Platform 23. Unpack and freshen up in your Pullman Suite before joining your new travelling companions for a drink in the Lounge Alternatively you can watch Table Mountain disappear on the horizon from the Observation Car.

Travel along the Hex River Pass which takes you through a 13.5km long tunnel. Climb the 959 metre pass to be met with spectacular views of the Hex River Mountains (the highest in the Western Cape). Disembark at Matjiesfontein for a visit to this historic Victorian railway village.

Reboard the train in time for your first, splendid meal aboard the Rovos train and retire to your luxurious suite.

Day 2

Flamingos and Diamonds

Awake this morning to a leisurely breakfast aboard the train. Spend the morning in the Observation Car looking out for springboks scampering through the fields and watching the beautiful landscape pass by.

Arrive into Kimberley by the mid afternoon. The town was founded during the famous “new rush” of the 1870s when thousands of men descended on the area to mine for diamonds. By 1873 Kimberley was the second largest town in South Africa. The city is still marketed as ‘city that sparkles’. Enjoy a visit to the "Big Hole", one of the largest hand dug mines in the world and to the Mine Museum before reboarding the train.

Continue your journey northwards passing a beautiful lake where flocks of thousands of flamingos often fill the sky. As the sun sets, pass through Bloemhof and Leeudoringstad enroute to Klerksdorp.

Day 3

Steam Train to Pretoria

Journey through Guateng's capital, Johannesburg, home to the greatest goldfields in history. Continue to Capital Park Pretoria, and travel the last few kilometres pulled by an original, lavishly restored steam locomotive. Once a lively hub of steam locomotives in the old Transvaal, Capital Park is now the home of Rovos Rail.

Disembark the train for a city tour of Pretoria. Named after Andries Pretorius, a hero of the Blood River battle, the city's main focal point is Church Square, home to Parliament and the Palace of Justice. After exploring the city, reboard for dinner as the Train Manager explains more about the two day safari ahead.

Days 4 and 5

On Safari

Arrive to Zeerust, a town surrounded by volcanic rocks along the winding Molopo River. Pack a two day bag and transfer to the beautiful 5* Tau Game Lodge, located on the border between South Africa and Botswana in the Madikwe game reserve. South Africa’s fourth largest game reserve covers 76,000 hectares of game-rich bush and grass plains.

Spend two days on safari in this beautiful and exciting game park, home to over 66 mammal species and 30 birds. Spend your evenings watching the sun go down over the plains from the terrace of your plush chalet or enjoy a relaxing massage in the spa.

Day 6

Botswana and Zimbabwe

After your final safari experience early this morning, board a luxury coach and cross the Botswana border. Twice the size of Arizona, Botswana is surrounded by four other African countries. The Kalahari Desert envelops the southern and western landscapes whilst the Okavango River runs through the North creating huge marshlands. Your journey will take you past the Tropic of Capricorn into the wide plains of the Kalahari.

Travel into vibrant Gaborone, Botswana's capital where the Rovos train is waiting. Back onboard, journey north through arid landscapes to Francistown, the site of Southern Africa's first gold rush. As dinner is served in the restaurant cars, cross the border into Zimbabwe.

Day 7

On Board through Zimbabwe

Leave the border town of Plumtree early this morning. Travel through Bulawayo, which is home to Cecil John Rhodes’ tomb and also boasts the longest railway platforms in the world. Relax with a book in the cosy lounge, listen to an informative lecture by the train's own historian or chat with fellow passengers in the Observation car.

Spend the night aboard the train at Thompson's Junction, just a couple of hours away from the Zambezi border.

Days 8 and 9

Livingstone and Victoria Falls

In the mid-morning, arrive at one of nature's most incredible marvels, Victoria Falls. Discovered by David Livingstone in 1855 and first reached by railway in 1904, the Victoria Falls are 108 metres deep and just over one mile across.

Disembark from the train at Victoria Falls station and check in at the celebrated 5* Victoria Falls. Spend two days discovering this incredible destination. Take a breathtaking helicopter ride across the falls, a once in a lifetime white water rafting trip along the rapids or hop aboard an African elephant for a fabulous experience riding one of nature's most powerful animals. Awake to the "smoke that thunders" as the sun rises beneath the mist and have dinner on the hotel's terrace, boasting wonderful views of the famous Victoria Falls bridge, connecting Zimbabwe with Zambia.

On the evening of your second day, reboard the Rovos train and journey to across the Zambian border to Livingstone.

Day 10

Zambia to the Batoka Plateau

As you enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning, the train heads to Kafue, located on the banks of the Kafue River, navigable for 400 kilometres. Lectures will be provided along the way with fascinating insights into the history of the area. Pass by Lusaka, the original capital of Northern Rhodesia and built on an enormous limestone plateau.

Dinner is served as you begin to travel the TAZARA or "Freedom" railway line. An original idea of the People's Republic of China, over 75,000 workers took five years to build the line which strengthened relationships between countries and re-ignited Cecil Rhodes’ dream of a Cape to Cairo rail journey.

Day 11

On board

Today is yours to unwind on the train and appreciate the sights and sounds of the Zambian landscape. The train slowly elevates to heights of 1220 metres above sea level. Pass rock formations, rolling hills and deep valleys as you journey through the African Rift System and watch the Zambezi river flow by. Pass Serenhe, where David Livingston gave his heart to Africa. His devoted servants carried him back to England where his body now lays to rest in Westminster Abbey.

Arrive in Mpika, a major crossroads for the Great North Road between Tanzania and Lake Tanganyika. As dinner is served, continue onwards to Kasam where you will spend the night.

Day 12

Chisimba Falls and Nakonde

As the country rises into Tanzania, follow the Rift Valley as it cuts through the landscape exposing the dry, volcanic rock beneath. Disembark the train for a morning excursion to the incredible Chisimba Falls. Continue through the Miomba woodland and Raffia palms until you reach the incredible Chozi River.

Arrive in Nakombe, the Zambian border and travel through Northern Zambia’s vast uninhabited bush land plateau at an altitude of about 1300 metres. After sunset you can view the fascinating starry sky of the southern hemisphere.

Day 13

Makambako and Mbeya

Arise for you final day aboard the Rovos train. Pass through typical African savannah, with enormous forests full of thorn trees, Boababs and hundreds of bush varieties.

Spend your afternoon observing the beauty of Tanzania from the Observation Car, enjoying an educational lecture from the onboard historian or sipping tea in the cosy lounge. End your day with a delicious three course dinner in the restaurant car before retiring to your suite for you final night aboard the train.

Day 14

Dar es Salaam

Awake this morning as the train passes through Africa's largest game reserve, Selous Park which covers an area of 54,600 square kilometres and has one of the largest concentrations of elephants and lions. As the train meanders through mangrove swamps and little palm trees you reach your final destination of Dar es Salaam.

Founded in 1862 by the sultan of Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam remains Tanzania's administrative capital and still maintains a sense of old-world colonialism. The train arrives into the historic TAZARA station. As you bid farewell to your new friends, the memories of the Pride of Africa rail journey will live on forever.

Itinerary - 13 Night Luxury Holiday by Rail - Deluxe Suite

Day 1

Arrive in Cape Town and Board the Rovos Rail

Arrive in the Mother City, Cape Town and depart on your African adventure from Platform 23. Unpack and freshen up in your Deluxe Suite before joining your new travelling companions for a drink in the Lounge Alternatively you can watch Table Mountain disappear on the horizon from the Observation Car.

Itinerary - 13 Night Luxury Holiday by Rail - Royal Suite

Day 1

Arrive in Cape Town and Board the Rovos Rail

Arrive in the Mother City, Cape Town and depart on your African adventure from Platform 23. Unpack and freshen up in your Royal Suite before joining your new travelling companions for a drink in the Lounge Alternatively you can watch Table Mountain disappear on the horizon from the Observation Car.
