Itinerary - 4 Night Holiday by Rail

Day 1

Brussels

Take the Eurostar from London to Brussels (journey time approximately 1 hour 51 minutes). On arrival check in for 1 night at the historic Leopold Hotel Brussels. The hotel is located in the centre of the Brussels, within walking distance of the Magritte Museum, European Parliament, Grand Place and Royal Palace. Relax in one of the cafes which line the city's avenues and squares or stroll around one of the many museums. Brussels is also the perfect place for shopping; from designer boutiques to fashion and craft shops, Brussels has it all!

After a busy day of wandering around this historic city, enjoy a meal in one of the superb restaurants Brussels has to offer.

Days 2 and 3

Ypres

Travel by train from Brussels to Ypres, approximately 1 hour 35 minutes. On arrival check-in for your 2 night stay at the Novotel Ypres Centrum. A third night free is available - please call for details.

During the middle ages, Ypres was a prosperous city, renowned for its linen trade. Today it is synonymous with the battles of the First World War. The town occupied a strategic position for the German planned advance through Belgium and into France. As a result, some of the bloodiest battles in human history were fought in the area and the town itself was completely devastated.

The main square was rebuilt after the war and is now the first stop for any visit to the city. The imposing Cloth Hall, originally built in the 13th Century is now home to the ‘In Flanders Fields Museum’ which offers a fascinating and moving history of WW1.

Included in this package is a guided visit to the Flanders fields. On a half day tour you will visit sites including Hill 60, Bayernwald trench complex, Bedford House Commonwealth cemetery and ANZAC and Canadian sites. End your day at the Menin Gate for the nightly 'Last Post' ceremony which commemorates the fallen Commonwealth soldiers without known graves.

Day 4

Lille

Take the train from Ypres to Lille in just 1 hour 20 minutes. On arrival check-in for 1 night at the Mercure Lille Centre Opera.

With a history dating back a thousand years, Lille offers a wealth of attractions. Visit the Palais de Beaux-Arts, one of the largest art museums in France, take a trip to the zoo or the lovely botanical gardens. Spend an afternoon wandering around the shops and boutiques of the old town or relax with a beer one of the cafés on the impressive main square.

Day 5

Lille to London

Enjoy breakfast in the hotel before travelling on Eurostar from Lille to London in only 1 hour 20 minutes.

Visit one of the temporary exhibitions in the globes of the futuristic Atomium, browse the designer boutiques along the Avenue Louise or the Antiques Markets around the Place du Petit Sablon, and don’t miss a visit to the stunning medieval Grand Place where you can sample some famous Belgian beer.

Ypres

Famous for the First World War battlefields known as Flanders fields, Ypres is a charming Belgian town. A highlight is the moving "Last Post" ceremony which takes place every night at Menin Gate.

Lille

Lille

Situated in the north of France, not far from the Belgian border, Lille is a lovely French city with a fascinating history. You can learn more about this history with a city tour or simply explore at leisure – all the main sights are easily accessible on foot. Wander around the shops and cobbled streets of the Old Town, visit the Musée des Beaux Arts, the largest museum in France outside Paris and enjoy café and patisseries in the stately Grand Place.
