The city was once a Habsburg fortress and parts of the original walls and fortifications remain. Areas of the Old Town are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander around the picturesque streets of the Grund, in the lower town or visit the Casemates Bock, a network of 18th century underground fortifications.
Cologne is a famous city along the River Rhine, whose skyline is dominated by its awe-inspiring Gothic Cathedral, one of the largest of its kind. Climb the south tower for spectacular views over the city and the river. There are also plenty of museums here including the Römisch-Germanisches Museum, offering an interesting history of the Rhine during Roman times and the Chocolate Museum, a must for chocoholics.
