Itinerary - 5 Night Holiday by Rail

Day 1

London to Montpellier

Board the Eurostar and speed under the Channel before arriving in Lille.

Take the high-speed TGV from Lille to Montpellier. Journey time is approximately 5 hours. Enjoy stunning French countryside and experience the beauty of the Rhone Valley and Provence whilst relaxing in your seat!

Check in at the New Hotel Du Midi Montpellier for your overnight stay.

Spend your evening in this elegant city in the heart of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, only a stone’s throw from the sun-kissed Mediterranean Sea. Its sunny climate provides a vibrant social scene full of artists and writers. Montpellier has plenty to offer when it comes to a tasty meal. Rue des Ecoles Laiques and nearby rue du Pila Saint Gely offer a variety of choices, including Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Lebanese and of course French cuisine.

Days 2 to 5

Barcelona

After breakfast, take the high speed train through the newly opened Perthus Tunnel and down across the Spanish border to Figueres. From here change onto a regional service to Barcelona.

Spend three days in Barcelona creating a Catalonian experience to remember. For the perfect introduction ramble down La Rambla, the most famous tree-lined pedestrian boulevard in the world packed with buskers, living statues, mime artists and the odd street performance. Stop in Mercat de la Boqueria for a fresh coconut juice and a fabulous insight into the world of Spanish cuisine.

Follow Gaudi’s legacy visiting his wonderful masterpieces. From the breathtaking Sagrada Familia to La Pedrera and Parc Guell, Gaudi has created some of the most inspiring architecture based on his love of religion, nature and Catalonia. Alternatively follow the footsteps of Picasso's passion for Impressionism at his Museum housed within the striking mansions on the Carrer de Montcada. Following your visit, take a wander through the dramatic Gothic Quarter, a maze of winding alleys connected by lively squares. Brimming with individual shops, lively cafes and energetic Catalonians, this is the heart of Barcelona!

Day 5

Barcelona to Lille

Travel back through the Spanish countryside and across the border to France whizzing past vineyards and lemon groves as you travel. Change on to your TGV train at Montpellier and continue to Lille.

Day 6

Lille to London

Spend the morning in Lille, soaking up the atmosphere at the Grand Place or doing some last minute shopping before journeying back to London on the Eurostar.

Montpellier

Montpellier

Situated on the Mediterranean coast and capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, Montpellier is the eighth biggest city in France with one of the most vibrant cultures. The main focal point is the Place de la Comedie, an impressive 18th Century Square perfect for people watching and enjoying the sights and sounds of Montpellier. The city is full of medieval buildings such as the Arc de Triumph, built in honour of Louis XIV in 1691 and the Tour de la Babote, a historic tower now converted into a observatory for the Sociata des Royale des Sciences. Its sunny climate, well-preserved vineyards and mountain vistas create a beautiful back-drop for this vibrant and eclectic city.

The buzzing capital of Catalonia, Barcelona offers fabulous architecture, fascinating museums, beaches, bars, great food and colourful street markets. Discover Gaudi’s architectural masterpieces including the epic and still unfinished Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, visit the Picasso Museum, wander down las Ramblas and take a tour of the lovely Gothic Quarter. In the summer you can even sunbathe on one of the city’s seven beaches!

Lille

Lille

Situated in the north of France, not far from the Belgian border, Lille is a lovely French city with a fascinating history. You can learn more about this history with a city tour or simply explore at leisure – all the main sights are easily accessible on foot. Wander around the shops and cobbled streets of the Old Town, visit the Musée des Beaux Arts, the largest museum in France outside Paris and enjoy café and patisseries in the stately Grand Place.
