Itinerary - 8 Night Holiday by Air + Rail

Day 1

London to Barcelona

Fly with British Airways from London to Barcelona. On arrival, check in at the Astoria Hotel Barcelona for a 3 night stay.

Settle into your hotel and then head out into the city to explore. The tree lined boulevard of Las Ramblas stretches down from the Plaça de Catalunya to the sea. Here you can usually see street performers in action and market stalls selling birds and flowers. Down at the harbour you can walk along the seafront to one of Barcelona's sandy beaches for a relaxing afternoon if the weather is fine.

Days 2 and 3

Barcelona

Enjoy two full days at leisure in Barcelona. There is an amazing range of architecture here from the medieval streets of the Barri Gòtic to the Modernista buildings in Eixample. Chief among this school of architects is Antoni Gaudi whose exhuberant creations are some of the most visited attractions in the city. Get great city views from the top of the mighty Sagrada Familia Cathedral or stroll along the shaded pathways of Park Güell.

Day 4

Barcelona to Madrid

Take an AVE service in Preferente class from Barcelona to Madrid (journey time just under 3 hours). During the journey, you will be served a light meal and drinks at your seat. There is also a lounge at Barcelona Sants station where you can wait in comfort before your journey. The lounge also offers a range of complimentary snacks and drinks. On arrival in Madrid, check in at the Catalonia Puerta del Sol for a 3 night stay.

Days 5 and 6

Madrid

Spend two days exploring the sights of Spain's vibrant capital city. If you like art galleries then you are in the right place! Madrid's so called 'Golden Triangle of Art' includes three fabulous galleries, the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (home to Picasso's Guernica), the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and most famous of all, the Prado which offers one of the finest collections in the world.

In the evening, why not do as the locals do and enjoy some al fresco tapas? Alternatively, chose from one of the huge choice of restaurants on offer. But be warned, madrileños do not usually dine before 9 o'clock in the evening.

Day 7

Madrid to Seville

Enjoy another morning in Madrid before taking the AVE service to Seville (journey time around 2 and a half hours). On arrival in Seville, check in at the Las Casas de la Juderia Seville for your 2 night stay.

Seville is a stunning city with grand, Moorish influenced architecture and a vibrant Andalucian culture. Spend an evening getting your bearings and perhaps enjoy some local tapas at a pavement bar.

Day 8

Seville

You have free day in Seville today to explore. Visit famous sights such as the huge Gothic Cathedral or the impressive Plaza de España, built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. Alternatively, the beautiful Real Alcázar is a Moorish palace with myriad rooms, courtyards and formal gardens to explore, and offers peaceful shelter from the summer sun.

Day 9

Seville to London

From the Andalucian capital, travel back to Madrid on the AVE train (journey time approximately 2 hours 30 minutes). Pass through Cordoba and continue north back to the Spanish capital. From here, take a BA flight home from Madrid to London in Euro Traveller class.

Astoria Hotel Barcelona Seville Catalonia Puerta del Sol AVE train Madrid Las Casas de la Juderia Seville

Barcelona

Barcelona

The buzzing capital of Catalonia, Barcelona offers fabulous architecture, fascinating museums, beaches, bars, great food and colourful street markets. Discover Gaudi’s architectural masterpieces including the epic and still unfinished Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, visit the Picasso Museum, wander down las Ramblas and take a tour of the lovely Gothic Quarter. In the summer you can even sunbathe on one of the city’s seven beaches!

Seville

Seville

Seville is the capital of Andalucía in southern Spain. Wander around the pretty orange tree lined streets of the Casco Antiguo (Old Town), climb to the top of the Giralda bell tower for spectacular views or visit the next door Cathedral of St Mary, one of the world’s largest Gothic churches. You can also spend a whole afternoon exploring the lavishly decorated rooms, peaceful courtyards and beautiful formal gardens of the Alcazar.

Madrid

Madrid

Spain’s capital Madrid is a vibrant city with world class museums and a lively tapas fuelled nightlife. Visit the famous Prado Museum and the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, home to Picasso’s epic Guernica or shop along Gran Via and in the fashionable Salamanca area. Madrid is a city with its own rhythms and a culture all its own. Don't expect to eat early (many restaurants don't even open their doors till gone 9pm) but do expect to eat well. You may even catch a performance of flamenco!
