Itinerary - 15 Night Luxury Holiday by Rail - Silver Class Cabin

Days 1 and 2

Moscow

Arrive into Moscow and transfer to the 5 star Marriott Royal Aurora Moscow (or similar) for a one night stay. Meet your fellow travellers as you enjoy a welcome reception dinner at the hotel.

Enjoy breakfast in the hotel before you are transferred to Moscow’s Yaroslavski station to join the luxury private sleeper train, the Golden Eagle. There will be a welcome reception and introduction to the train staff in the bar car, followed by dinner as the train heads eastwards towards Yaroslavl. This is the time of year the Russians call ‘White Nights’ so there won't be many hours of darkness in the next two weeks!

Day 3

Kungor and Yekaterinburg

Kungor, which is located in the Urals, is most famous for its Ice Caves which date back over 12,000 years and is one of the biggest caves in the world. In the late evening the train continues towards Yekaterinburg. Yekaterinburg is the third largest Russian city and was founded in 1723 by Peter the Great. You are taken to the poignant site where the Romanov, Nicholas II of Russia was executed with his family by the Bolsheviks in 1918. The site is now a church dedicated to their memory and the site provides a powerful insight into the turmoil of the Russian Revolution.

Day 4

Kalino

Enjoy breakfast on the train before arriving in the town of Kalino. Take the opportunity to visit the preserved Perm-36 Gulag and Museum in nearby Kutchino which was the site of one of the harshest Soviet Gulag prison camps for political opponents during the communist Soviet period and only closed in 1990.

Day 5

Velikiy Ustyug

Today you are given the opportunity to visit the official residence of Ded Moroz which is located close to the town of Veliky Ustyug. You will also be given a tour of this once important and beautiful city which is situated on the banks of the Sukhona River.

Day 6

Vorkuta

Spend the morning on the train before arriving in the coal-mining town of Vortuka in the afternoon. Vortuka is the location for one of the most notorious forced labour camps of the Gulag which was established in 1932.

Day 7

Labitnangi and Salekhard

From Labitnangi, cross the River Ob to the prosperous town of Salekhard. You are taken on a tour of the town which is considered to be the only town in the world which is located right on the Polar Circle. The train departs Labitnangi before stopping in the afternoon at the Europe/Asia Monument.

Day 8

Kotlas

Today is spent in the town of Kotlas. Kotlas is a situated in the south of Arkhangelsk Oblast, at the confluence of the Northern Dvina and Vychegda Rivers. It is an important river port on one of the largest and most important waterways of the northern European portion of Russia.

Day 9

Arkhangel

Spend the day touring Arkhangel, located on the banks of the White Sea and was the chief seaport of medieval Russia. You are taken on a city tour which includes visits to the British and American Arctic Convoy War Graves as well as the Wooden Architecture Museum.

Day 10

Solovetsky Island

There is an early start this morning as you arrive into Kem. You are then transferred onto a small boat which takes you to the Solovetsky Monastery on Solovetsky Island. The Island is the location used as the basis for Solzhenitzyn’s "Gulag Archipelago" and is infamous for its ‘Special Purpose Camp’ which was set up by Stalin. After spending the day on Solovetsky Island you cross the Arctic Circle and head to the most northerly point on the journey.

Day 11

Nikel Murmansk and Murmansk

Enjoy breakfast on the train before arriving at Nikel, which is situated on the border with Norway. The train station at Nikel is close to the Nikel smelting plant. The plant has been partly responsible for the devastation to the surrounding countryside. This is an eerie place but it has been considered to be one of the highlights of previous tours. In the early evening the train arrives in Murmansk where you will be taken on a city tour which also includes a visit to the Nuclear Icebreaker Museum Ship.

Day 12

Onboard

Spend the day onboard the Golden Eagles as it heads south from the Arctic Circle.

Day 13

Pavlovsk and St Petersburg

Enjoy breakfast on the train before alighting in Pavlovsk. Visit Catherine’s Summer Palace in Pushkin and the Amber Room. Lunch is served at the Podvorye Restaurant which is a typical Russian Log House, before you continue to St Petersburg.

See the many sights of St Petersburg as you are taken on an afternoon tour of this grand city. Return to the Golden Eagle for dinner as the train departs St Petersburg in the evening.

Day 14

Novgorod and Pskov

Enjoy a morning tour of Novgorod which is one of the oldest towns in Russia. You then continue to Psko, located on the Latvian border, to explorer its ancient and well restored centre. It was in this train station that Tsar Nicholas II abdicated on the 15th March 1915. Return to the train for the final night onboard.

Days 15 and 16

Moscow

Spend the morning travelling down the St Petersburg - Moscow mainline before arriving at Moscow Leningradski station. On arrival in Moscow you are transferred to the 5 star Marriott Moscow Hotel for an overnight stay. Spend the afternoon exploring all Moscow has to offer before returning to the hotel for a farewell dinner.

The next morning, enjoy breakfast in the hotel before transfers are provided for your journey home or onward travels.

Marriott Royal Aurora Moscow

Moscow

Moscow

Moscow is a mighty capital city with some iconic attractions including the Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Tomb, containing the Communist leader’s embalmed body, St Basil’s Cathedral and Gorky Park. Make sure you have a look around the grand and ornately decorated State Historical Museum, just next to the Kremlin. Some of the stations on the metro resemble underground stately homes and are well worth a visit!

St Petersburg

St Petersburg

The culturally rich city of St Petersburg is a highlight of any itinerary to Russia. Marvel at the European-inspired architecture, boulevards and tree-lined canals of this magnificent city. Don’t miss a visit to the Hermitage, one of the world’s largest and most famous art museums, located over several buildings along the River Neva, one of which was the former Winter Palace of the Russian Tsars.

Itinerary - 15 Night Luxury Holiday by Rail - Gold Class Cabin

Day 14

Novgorod and Pskov

Enjoy a morning tour of Novgorod which is one of the oldest towns in Russia. You then continue to Psko, located on the Latvian border, to explorer its ancient and well restored centre.
