Itinerary - 5 Night Holiday by Rail

Day 1

London to Amsterdam

Travel on Eurostar from London to Brussels where you transfer onto the local train to Amsterdam. On arrival in Amsterdam check into the Hampshire Eden Amsterdam for a 2 night stay.

Often referred to as ‘the Venice of the North’, Amsterdam has more than one hundred kilometres of canals, around ninety islands and fifteen hundred bridges. The 17th Century network of three main canals in the centre has now been granted UNESCO World Heritage status. The city is also a centre of culture, with seventy-five festivals a year and some great galleries including the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.

When you need a break, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants to discover. Or you could even go further afield and find a stretch of beach to relax on at Zandvoort or Bloemendaal aan Zee.

Day 2

Amsterdam

Enjoy breakfast in the hotel before seeing more of this cosmopolitan city. Take a cruise along the canals, visit the Anne Frank House or the Oude Kirche or go shopping in the Nine Streets (negen straatjes) for jewellers, boutiques and vintage stores.

Hiring a bike is a great way to get around Amsterdam. There are dedicated bike paths throughout the city and bikes are available to hire from around €8 per day.

Day 3

Amsterdam to Utrecht

After breakfast in the hotel, travel by train from Amsterdam to Utrecht. On arrival in Utrecht check into the NH Utrecht for an overnight stay.

Spend the rest of the day exploring Utrecht. Utrecht is one of the oldest cities in Holland and its medieval houses, canals and churches are all worth seeing during your time here. The Dom Tower dominates the skyline and is the highest and oldest church tower in Holland.

After a busy day sightseeing relax and enjoy a drink and some food in one of the many restaurants which line the Oudegracht canal in the city centre of Utrecht.

Day 4

Utrecht to Maastricht

After breakfast in the hotel you travel by train from Amsterdam to Maastricht. On arrival in Maastricht check into the Hampshire Design Hotel Maastricht for a 2 night stay.

Spend the rest of the day discovering all Maastricht has to offer. Go for a wander around the cobbled streets of Vrijthof Square or take to the water with a river cruise on the River Maas.

Day 5

Maastricht

Enjoy breakfast in the hotel before you have another day exploring the oldest city in Holland. Why not take a trip to the Caves of Mount St Pieter which represent thousands of years of history or marvel at the Romanesque architecture of the Basilica of Our Beloved Lady?

After a busy day sightseeing relax in one of the many bars and restaurants the city has to offer.

Day 6

Maastricht to London

After breakfast in the hotel travel back to Brussels by train before taking the Eurostar back to London.

Amsterdam is a multifaceted city, with something for every traveller’s taste. It’s packed with culture, history and architecture and boasts one of the largest historic centres in Europe. Amsterdam has around seven thousand registered historic buildings and an impressive collection of museums. These include the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, offering a large collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. Don’t miss a boat ride along the city’s historic canals.

Utrecht

Utrecht is a beautiful city famed for its canal-side terraces and medieval Dom Church. There's also a vibrant cultural scene here and some fascinating museums. Go for a romantic river trip one of the many canals or climb the 465 stairs of the Dom Tower for incredible views over the city. The Dom Tower is the highest and oldest church tower in Holland and is Utrecht's landmark.

Maastricht

Maastricht

Maastricht is the capital of the Dutch province of Limburg and sits either side of the River Maas. The city has a rich history going back to the time of the Celts and then the Romans; as such the city has a wonderful combination of old and new architecture; from the 11th century Basilica of Our Beloved Lady to the futuristic Bonnefanten Museum. Have a coffee on Vrijthof Square, walk through history at The Caves of Mount St Pieter then enjoy a relaxing cruise on the River Maas.
