Itinerary - 8 Night Luxury Holiday by Rail - Pullman Suite

Day 1

Depart Capital Park Pretoria

Board the "Pride of Africa" train in Pretoria, the home of Rovos Rail. The impressive Capital Park Station, once home to all the steam trains in the Transvaal, is a fantastic departure point for your adventure.

Settle in to your luxurious Pullman Suite and meet with fellow passengers for a drink in the cosy lounge bar. As lunch is served make your ascent to Belfast, the highest train station between the coast and Pretoria at 1,970 metres above sea level. Journey through the rolling hills of Machadodorp before descending through the Waterval-Boven and Waterval-Onder, opened by President Kruger in 1895. The spectacular scenery continues before you arrive in Madelane Station for your first sleep aboard the "Pride of Africa".

Day 2

Mkhaya Game Reserve

Awake early for a refreshing breakfast aboard the train. The golfers will travel to the luxurious Leopard Creek Golf Course whilst other guests spend the morning at the exhilarating Kruger Park, opened by the legendary Paul Kruger in 1898. Now one of Africa's premier reserves, the Kruger contains over 450 bird species, 147 mammals and 115 reptiles. Keep watch for the sloping leopards and powerful rhinos who make their home here.

As you travel through Komatipoort along the South African/Mozambique border, enjoy lunch before arriving to Swaziland, a country of mountainous landscapes and a rich political history. Disembark for an afternoon game drive at the Mkhaya Game Reserve, a refuge for endangered species such as the white rhino, buffalo and sable antelope.

Return to the "Pride of Africa" for a well earned dinner and retire to bed.

Day 3

The Valley of a Thousand Hills

Today, the train pulls into Hluhluwe train station for an early morning game drive to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, once the hunting grounds of Zulu Kings. The beautiful Hluhluwe River meanders through the centre of the reserve offering rich grazing and a variety of species. Keep your eyes peeled for lions, cheetahs and towering giraffes trotting through the park.

Brunch is served as the train snakes through the Valley of a Thousand Hills en route to Durban. Home to the Anglo-Boer battlefields, these hills are privy to thousands of years of history and offer stunning views of never-ending rivers and valleys.

Arrive in Durban and disembark the train for a traditional dinner in South Africa's third largest city, home to superb beaches, beautiful Botanical gardens and a number of cultural sights.

Day 4

Ardmore and The Drakensberg

This morning, guests travelling on the golf excursions journey to Durban Country Club Beachwood. Alternatively, non-golfers will disembark for a fascinating tour of the Ardmore ceramics gallery. Enjoy tea overlooking the charming river before returning to the "Pride of Africa" for lunch.

The train journeys through Natal's capital, Pietermaritzburg, where Mahatama Gandhi was thrown from 1st class train compartment thus changing his attitude for life and gaining him a worldwide reputation as a human rights activist. Enjoy lunch as you pass through the famous town of Ladysmith, besieged by the Boers in 1900 and home to the "Natal Battlefields". Climb into the Drakensberg Mountains, translated from Afrikaans as "Dragon Mountains" and stop at Bethlehem, one of the coldest parts of South Africa for your overnight stop.

Day 5

Bloemfontain

Awake in South Africa's "Free State" capital of Bloemfontain for a hearty breakfast. The Free State goldfields rivaled those of Johannesburg and now make up the most important agricultural region of the country. Golfers will disembark for the prestigious Bloemfontain golf club whilst non-golfers enjoy a city tour.

As the train continues onwards through the Drakensberg, unwind with a book in the comfortable lounge area, relax in your suite or chat with fellow passengers in the Observation Car, as the train heads southwards towards the coastline. Journey past the Orange River and the Great Karoo with landscapes reminiscent of the Australian outback. Settle down in the luxurious restaurant cars for a sumptuous dinner before returning to your suite.

Day 6

Port Elizabeth and Addo Elephant Park

This morning, arrive into Port Elizabeth where the golfers depart for the Humewood Golf Club. Other guests will be transported to the remarkable Addo Elephant Park for a game drive. With an objective to protect the persecuted African elephant population the park has now gained worldwide recognition and is home at least 340 elephants!

Re-board the train for lunch as the train continues to Port Elizabeth, founded in 1799 when Fort Frederick was built by the British.

Day 7

Oudtshoorn Ostrich Farm and George

Enjoy breakfast this morning as the "Pride of Africa" travels south-west, through Oudtshoorn, the world capital of the ostrich! The dusty, sandy plains are the perfect environment for the ostrich and guests have the opportunity to visit an ostrich farm to experience this incredible bird up close.

Travel through an impressive mountain range, the Outeniqua Mountains. Have an afternoon cocktail in the bar before arriving in George, named after King George III of England and capital of the Southern Cape. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore this peaceful town. For dinner, sample typical African fare at the Fancourt Golf Estate before returning to the train.

Day 8

The Garden Route

As the golfers onboard transfer either to the Ernie Els Golf Course or the Fancourt Golf Course for their final tee-off, other guests disembark the train for a visit to the incredibly pretty town of Knysna. One of the most stunning lagoons in the world, Knysna was home for a number of years to George Bernard Shaw, the celebrated Irish playwright. Enjoy a ferry ride across the lagoon (which is full of oysters) to the Featherbed Nature Reserve.

Once back onboard the train, meander along the Garden Route, where the azure seas are constantly visible from the train windows. Continue past well-known South African vineyards.

Stop overnight in Swellendam, home to a fine collection of white-washed Dutch houses.

Day 9

Arrival to Cape Town

This morning, continue along the Garden Route towards Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. A number of factors here have caused hundreds of shipwrecks over the years.

In the mid-morning, stop at the KWV brandy distillery, once the sole distributor of all South African wine. Board the train for a wonderfully scenic journey into Cape Town via the Cape Fold Mountains and vineyards. At Gouda, the "Pride of Africa" loops to the left and descends through the Drakensberg Mountains.

Arrive in style to the "Mother City", Cape Town. Originally a refreshment station for the Dutch East India Trading Company, Cape Town has grown into a thriving tourist destination, known around the world for its stunning scenery and the incredible Table Mountain. Arrive into Platform 23 of Cape Town station and disembark the "Pride of Africa" with incredible memories to take home!

Itinerary - 8 Night Luxury Holiday by Rail - Deluxe Suite

Day 1

Depart Capital Park Pretoria

Board the "Pride of Africa" train in Pretoria, the home of Rovos Rail. The impressive Capital Park Station, once home to all the steam trains in the Transvaal, is a fantastic departure point for your adventure.

Settle in to your luxurious Deluxe Suite and meet with fellow passengers for a drink in the cosy lounge bar.

Itinerary - 8 Night Luxury Holiday by Rail - Royal Suite

Day 1

Depart Capital Park Pretoria

Board the "Pride of Africa" train in Pretoria, the home of Rovos Rail. The impressive Capital Park Station, once home to all the steam trains in the Transvaal, is a fantastic departure point for your adventure.

Settle in to your luxurious Royal Suite and meet with fellow passengers for a drink in the cosy lounge bar.
