Troyes City Guide
The historic city of Troyes dates back to Roman times, but is now famous for being at the heart of France's champagne region. Wander around Troyes' charming centre (the city centre map shows the boulevards arranged in the shape of a champagne cork), admire the medieval wood-beamed houses, and relax with a glass of champagne.
What to do and see in and around Troyes
Champagne
Although Troyes is in the heart of the champagne region, there are no champagne houses in the centre of the city. Book a trip to some of the vineyards just outside the city to see how champagne is created and enjoy a tasting.
Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul Cathedral
The site of this Roman Catholic Cathedral has been used for religious buildings since the 4th century. The current Cathedral is a gothic style building with 1,500 square metres of stunning stained glass windows.
Museum of Modern Art
Located in the historic Bishop's Palace, Troyes Museum of Modern Art contains 2000 modern art works, including pieces by Modigliani, Matisse, Picasso and Cezanne. One of the highlights of the museum is the collection of glass.
Museum of Craft Tools (Maison de l’Outil)
The Museum of Craft Tools is set in a 15th century townhouse in the centre of Troyes. Housing over 20,000 tools the museum is one of the largest craft tool museums in the world. Visitors to the museum have a unique chance to explore one of the town's historic houses.
Gourmet Troyes
Taste the local Troyes speciality andouillette, a spiced pork sausage that is cooked for over 5 hours. There is an afternoon food market which takes place in Place St-Rémy, which is an excellent place to pick up local gourmet goodies including cheese and bread. For lunch and dinner there are numerous restaurants offering dishes to suit every taste. As you are in the heart of Champagne country, a glass of bubbly goes with every meal!
Shopping
In the centre of Troyes there are boutiques, high street shops and some antique shops, or you can head out of the city to one of the large factory outlets in the surrounding area.
