Madrid's Museo del Prado is one of the finest and most famous museums in the world and holds a collection of 8,000 paintings and over 10,000 other works of art. Found in the city centre, the Villanueva building that houses most of the museum was constructed during the reign of Charles III in 1785. The site was damaged when used as a headquarters by Napoleonic troops in the early 19th century but rebuilt under the order of Ferdinand VII. Some of the most famous paintings in Spanish history are found within the Villanueva, including Las Meninas by Velazquez and The Adoration of the Shepherds by El Greco. The museum's unrivalled collection of Spanish art features almost 150 works by Goya, including The Third of May 1808, painted to express the artist's anger at events during Spain's War of Independence. The series of Black Paintings demonstrate the dark moods of the painter's final years. The Prado's collection of works by Hieronymous Bosch includes the Garden of Earthly Delights, rated as one of the world's finest paintings. Presenting an unparalleled history of Spanish and European artwork, the Prado Museum is a must for visitors on a break in Madrid.
Two of the world’s most famous art museums have decided to exchange works. The Prado in the Hermitage earlier this year was a resounding success, and now the Hermitage in St Petersburg will bring a selection of works illustrating the splendour and variety of its collection to the Prado for a five month period. The exhibition, curated by Hermitage director Mikhail Piotrovsky, will incorporate archaeological items, decorative arts including court dress and furniture, paintings, sculptures and drawings from 5BC to the 20th century. This collection also aims to give an insight into the history of the Hermitage, a former royal palace that was once the state residence of Russian Tsars. The works on show include paintings by Caravaggio, Titian, Ribera, Velázquez and Rembrandt as well as impressionist/ post-impressionist favourites such as Monet, Cézanne, Renoir, Gauguin and Matisse. There will also be three canvases by Picasso and works by Russian Avant-Garde artists Kandinsky and Malevich. Amongst the other objects on display are items of jewellery from Peter the Great’s collection, a sword encrusted with diamonds given to the Tsar by the Indian Ambassador in the 18th century, and Vase of Flowers in Rock Crystal, Gold and Diamonds by the jeweller to the Russian imperial family, Carl Fabergé.
