Cannes City Guide

Cannes is world famous for its annual film festival, and the gathering of celebrities that arrive for the presentation of the "Palme d'Or" every May. During the rest of the year visit Cannes to explore the streets of the old town and admire the view from the top of Le Suquet, or wander along La Croisette, window shopping and people watching!
Cannes is 5½ hours from Paris by train.

What to do and see in and around Cannes

La Croisette
La Croisette is the real heart of Cannes - it's the place to promenade along the beach front, and see and be seen! On one side the promenade is lined with luxury hotels and designer boutiques, and the other side has excellent views over the Bay.

Iles de Lérins
Iles de Lérins are two islands 15 minutes by ferry from Cannes. The biggest island is St Marguerite, which has a Fort (where the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned), a small aquarium, and a Musée de Mer. On St Honorat is an abbey, and a small monastic shop.

Le Suquet
Le Suquet is the old town area of Cannes, set on the hill overlooking the bay and the town. Le Suquet is a charming maze of tiny streets, and picturesque squares. Within Le Suquet is the 17th century Eglise Notre-Dame d'Esperance, and the Musée de la Castre which contains a collection of musical instruments, and old prints of Cannes.

Forville Market
Forville Market is a covered market close to the Le Suquet area of Cannes. Local farmers and fishermen sell their produce at the market - including fish, olives, pate, cheese, meat, flowers, and much more! Every Monday there is a flea market in the area.

Nice
30 minutes from Cannes by train
Nice is the fifth largest city in France, and capital of the French Riviera. Visit Nice to explore the winding streets of the old town, wander along the palm lined boulevards beside the beach, or shop at the designer boutiques.

Monaco
50 minutes from Cannes by train
Monaco is an independent principality, ruled by the Grimaldi family. At the centre of Monaco is Monte-Carlo where you can visit the famous casino and admire huge yachts in the Port de Monaco. Explore the royal Palace overlooking the port, or walk around the roads and follow the famous race course.

Come to Cannes for a short break

Cannes is a delightful city which lies on the Mediterranean and offers many wonderful attractions to keep visitors busy.

A trip to the French city would not be complete without a stroll along La Croissette, the stretch of sidewalk that lines the length of Cannes' shore.

Billboards advertising the film festival, smart boutiques and wonderful cafes can be found on the promenade, while it is also possible to rent a sun bed and parasol and laze on the beautiful sandy beach.

For museum lovers, the Museee de la Castre is excellent. The museum houses a vast array of Mediterranean artefacts and a fantastic collection of musical instruments from across the world, in addition to offering fabulous views of the city from the medieval tower.

The Musee de la Malamison is also well worth a visit, with exhibitions of contemporary art and beautiful gardens to be explored.

Picturesque architecture and beautiful gardens make a trip to the suburb of Cannet highly recommended, which also contains several art and crafts galleries.

Cannes explodes into life during the Film Festival held each May, with visitors flocking to the city to do some celebrity spotting. The city however is a fantastic choice for a short break all year round, with a lively town centre and welcoming atmosphere.

Cannes Film Festival

Head to Cannes this May to witness one of the cinema world's most prestigious festivals. The Festival de Cannes is a hub of industry activity when it takes place each year. Production bosses, directors and the world's finest actors descend upon the town for the shindig. With so many premieres and an endless stream of stars pouring into the theatres, the festival is a magnet for movie buffs and celebrity spotters alike. At its essence, the event has much in common with other film festivals in that it seeks to promote new and diverse filmmaking. However, having been established for over 60 years, it is clear Cannes has that little extra bit of magic which keeps it at the top of the game. If you do want to mix with the stars at Cannes film festival you have to book your hotel and travel as far in advance of the event as possible.
