Biarritz was one of the most popular seaside resorts in Europe - made fashionable by Napoleon III's wife Empress Eugénie, and visited by European Royalty and film stars. What to do and see in and around Biarritz

Sea Museum
The Sea Museum houses more than 150 different species of fish and other creatures found in the Bay of Biscay. Highlights include the feeding of the seals every day at 10.30am and 5pm. The museum also has an exhibition on whaling and the local fishing industry.

Asiatica
Asiatica is one of Europe's top museums of oriental art. Located in the heart of Biarritz, the museum has an impressive collection of art representing the countries of India, Nepal, Tibet and China.

Historical Museum of Biarritz
The Historical Museum of Biarritz is housed in an old church. The exhibition includes paintings, costumes and artefacts portraying the history and growth of Biarritz, from a small fishing village to sophisticated seaside resort.

Hôtel du Palais
The Hôtel du Palais, formerly known as Villa Eugénie, is one of the city’s main landmarks. It was built in the mid 19th century by Napoleon III for his wife, Eugénie, who he met in Biarritz. The building is now an elegant hotel with a Guerlain Spa.

Quai de la Grande Plage
The Quai de la Grande Plage is Biarritz’s famous beach promenade and a hot spot for all visitors. Wander along the seafront and admire the view of the Atlantic.

Rocher de la Vierge
The impressive Rock of the Virgin is found at the end of Pointe Atalaye. The white statue of the Virgin standing on it has become something of Biarritz’ trademark. Walk over the footbridge to the rocky island and enjoy the dramatic and most impressive view of the bay and the mountains.

Chocolate Museum
A visit to the delicious Chocolate Museum will allow you to discover the tempting world of chocolate. The museum gives you an insight in the history and art of chocolate as well as tasting sessions.

Bayonne
10 minutes by train from Biarritz
Bayonne is the capital of the French Basque country. The town is famous for its smoked ham, chocolate and marzipan. Explore the narrow streets of the old town or sit down in one of the many cafés and sample some local delights.
