So much to do in Zurich
Set on the banks of the River Limmat, the Old Town of Zurich is a beautiful place to visit. With a number of interesting historical sites, this quarter has some of Zurich's most famous landmarks.
The symbol of Zurich has to be the Grossmunster Church. With its twin spires, it is one of the most obvious sights in the city. Legend has it that Charlemagne had the church erected after discovering the graves of the two martyrs of Zurich, Felix and Regula, on the site – hence the two spires. This Romanesque building is a treat for visitors, especially as one of the towers is open and available for those willing to scale the heights. Despite the long climb, the panoramic views of Zurich from the top make this well worth a visit.
Also near the banks of the river is the Swiss National Museum. This large, castle-like structure is impressive from the outside and gets even more interesting upon entry, with a vast array of artefacts and treasures relating to the country's history. The museum has a strong focus on the prehistoric age and contains some of the oldest wheels ever to be discovered, dating from the Stone Age and found in Zurich itself.
The grassy banks of the River Limmat make Zurich an ideal spot for relaxing while taking a short summer break in the city. During the warmer months of the year, the banks are full of activity, with people relaxing in the sun or cooling off in the water.
Zurich is famed for its shopping experience and the Niederdorf region is where all the trendy shops and restaurants are situated. Many small and interesting boutiques are dotted all over this area, which is a pedestrianised zone during the day. At night it comes alive with a selection of cool bars and restaurants.
With an interesting mix of old sites and modern facilities, Zurich is an ideal place to visit for a short break.
