Paris' Musee d'Orsay offers something different for art-lovers

Visitors to Paris keen to explore the city's art offerings may want to consider the Musee D'Orsay for a change from the Louvre.

The venue, situated in the old Gare d'Orsay railway station, opened in 1987 and has since displayed artworks from a host of prestigious names, ranging from Vincent Van Gogh to France's own, Claude Monet.

The museum’s current exhibition sees a comparison of Pablo Picasso and Edouard Manet Le dejeuner sur l'herbe until February 1st, with the Unrealised Dreams, Plans for Paris (1850 - 1900) in-house exhibition, a display of architectural projects, also ending on the same day.

According to the venue's official website, it is "a museum on a human scale", offering everyone from individuals to organisations an opportunity to get involved with sponsoring and in turn become part of its history.

In addition to getting lost on your own in the artistic spoils of the site, there are nineteenth-century lecture tours, music concerts in the Auditorium, as well as the museum shop to pick up a souvenir of your visit. Books, DVDs, posters, jewellery and fashion are all available.

The nearest metro stations are Solferino, Assemblee Nationale, Concorde and Tuileries.
