City of Architecture and Heritage in Paris

The new City of Architecture and Heritage building in Paris is set to open its doors to the public in March, with the promise that visitors will be astonished by the depth and breadth of its offerings.

The ambitious project will see three separate French architectural institutions combining – the Museum of French Monuments, the French Institute of Architecture and the CEDHEC architectural school – into a single comprehensive account of French construction projects from the past, the present and the future.

Occupying 8,000 square metres within the grounds of the Chaillot Palace, the venture aims to inform and amaze the public about the history and continued relevance of architecture, the landscape and town planning. Devoted to French architecture from the 12th century to the present day, the museum will feature meetings, debates and workshops which will vie for visitors' attention.

Elsewhere, a separate 2,300 square metre space under the beautiful stone arches of the old Trocadero Palace will host temporary displays focusing on the future of architectural design.

Those who cannot wait for the official launch in March will be sure to want to investigate the series of preliminary events that have been organised in and around the Chaillot Palace, including the presentation of awards to the best architect and landscape designer of the year in January. The awards will be held in the building's huge auditorium, which will also host a series of courses and presentations on the history of architecture in the run-up to the grand opening.

With so many events and exhibitions to take in at what will be the world's biggest architecture centre, 2007 seems set to be the year in which visitors will be able to appreciate Paris' sparkling architectural history in all its glory.
