Mercurial Montreux

Liberated by Napoleon, reclaimed by musicians - Montreux has had more than its fair share of visitors over the course of its history. The municipality sits on the north-east shore of Lake Geneva, making it a key visit on a trip to the Swiss Riviera.

Before the arrival of the princes of Savoy, who established the present canton of Vaud, Montreux was a settlement for Roman armies en route to Gaul. These days, the region attracts European tourists of refined taste, in thrall to the natural beauty, cultural buzz and culinary expertise on offer.

The spectacular setting at the tip of the lake and at the foot of the Alps affords wonderful opportunities for hiking or rail travel on the Montreux-Oberland-Bernois and Golden Pass Railway. One of the best views of the lake can be achieved from the Chateau of Chillon, which stands on a small island just yards from the shore.

Montreux has also been something of amecca for musicians over the years, having been immortalized in songs by Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Queen owned their own studio here, which may in part explain the municipality's love of Freddie Mercury. Every September, Montreux hosts a memorial day for the late singer, whose statue stands permanently in Place du Marché, overlooking Lake Geneva.

With a mild and pleasant climate, Montreux offers a warm welcome to visitors all year round, whether they are headed to the Christmas Market or to the summer's international Jazz Festival.

Why not head to Montreux for a short break.
