La Scala in Milan

Milan's La Scala is one of the world's most famous opera houses and one of the city's most fascinating attractions.

The building was commissioned by the Empress of Austria in the 18th century and has long been a meeting place for rich and famous Milanese. Severely damaged by bombing during World War Two, La Scala's revival was aided by famous conductor Arturo Toscanini, who helped fund the reconstruction.

The opera house underwent an extensive renovation from 2002 to 2004 to restore the venue to its former glory, before reopening on December 7th 2004 with a performance of Salieri's L'Europa Riconsciuta – the same opera that was performed at La Scala's original opening in 1778.

Now featuring a new stage and refurbished auditorium, La Scala's 2006/07 season includes numerous world-famous names, with opera from the likes of Leonard Bernstein and Leos Janacek scheduled to be performed within the next few months, while legendary conductor Daniel Barenboim will take up his position as principal guest conductor in the autumn.

La Scala also has its own museum, founded in 1911, which contains statues, costumes, paintings and manuscripts gathered during the opera house's 200 years' worth of performances. A key part of Milan's cultural heritage, a trip to La Scala should be on the itinerary of all visitors to the city.
