National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon
Lisbon's National Museum of Ancient Art has stood for over 120 years and is one of the most important museums in Europe.
Also known as the Green Shutter Museum, the museum is found inside a 17th century palace in Lisbon's Chiado district. The venue holds over 13,000 pieces of decorative art as well as countless paintings from Portuguese and European masters.
Portugal's heritage is celebrated as part of the museum's collection, with one of the most famous pieces on display being the Saint Vincent Panels, painted by Portuguese artist Nuno Goncalves in the 15th century.
Artwork from 16th and 17th century Portugal is also featured, with works on show by figures such as Vasco Fernandes, Jorge Afonso and Vieira Portuense. The more wide-ranging European sector features work by Dürer, Raphael, Velasquez and Bosch.
Jewellery, ceramics, furniture are all featured in the decorative arts section, with items sourced from across Europe and Asia and dating back to the early Medieval period.
The museum also holds a number of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, with forthcoming events including an examination of the use of landscape in 16th to 19th century artwork. The Green Shutter Museum's unique range of Portuguese and European treasures makes it an essential part of any trip to Lisbon.
