Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon
Focusing on everything from the arts to local education, Lisbon's Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation features numerous attractions for visitors and is one of the biggest cultural centres in Portugal.
The foundation contributes to projects in France and the UK as well as across Portugal, but it is in Lisbon that the organisation is based. The Gulbenkian Museum and Museum of Modern Art provide unique opportunities to experience the foundation's extensive cultural collections.
The foundation was established via a clause in the will of Armenian philanthropist Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, who had previously kept a private museum at his home in Paris. Since 1969 these artefacts have been integrated into the foundation's own collections.
Cultural relics on display at the Gulbenkian Museum range from 11th century European paintings to decorative Islamic art and Roman sculptures. The Museum of Modern Art contains work from great Portuguese painters of the 20th century, including pieces by Paula Rego.
Both museums are found in the Gulbenkian Park, a space designed by architect and politician Ribeiro Telles, which also accommodates an auditorium and educational centre.
The foundation also gives its name to a choir and orchestra, which play concerts across Europe and regularly perform within the park itself. With music, history and lavish park gardens all contributing to its formidable reputation, the foundation is a great destination for those on a relaxing break.
