Palais des Nations in Geneva

The Palais des Nations in Geneva is the home of the historical United Nations and provides a wonderful opportunity for visitors to discover more about the history of this body.

Guided tours of the ornate palace are held throughout the year, but as winter approaches a new timetable is run, with the palace opening weekdays from 10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm from September onwards.

Originally the seat of power for the UN's predecessor, the League of Nations, this magnificent building was completed in 1936, although by this time the League was already coming under intense pressure as Europe headed towards the Second World War.

A number of top European architects were commissioned to design and build this imposing structure and as such the result is hugely impressive and is one of Geneva's most remarkable buildings.

The palace is also surrounded by large gardens, which include a wide variety of sculptures, such as the famous Armillary Sphere, which has become a symbol of the UN.

The building was extended in 1975 to meet the needs of the expanding UN and although much of the work of the international body is now carried out in New York, the organisation's spiritual home remains in Geneva, making the Palais des Nations an ideal place to spend some time while on a short break to the city.
