Fun and fascinating Frankfurt

Many view Frankfurt as a business centre, with over 400 banks and continental Europe's biggest stock exchange, yet the German city has far more to offer and would make an excellent short city break.

Frankfurt contains a fabulous mix of the old and new, with huge skyscrapers, including Europe's tallest office building, and also old, half-timbered houses. More than a quarter of the city's population are foreign, creating an interesting cultural mix.

Those interested in the arts will find plenty on offer, with many wonderful museums and galleries. Particularly popular with young visitors is the Naturmuseum Senckenberg, which has a fabulous natural history collection including mummified cats and huge free-standing animal skeletons.

The Stadelsches Kunstinstitut and Galerie is Frankfurt's oldest museum and contains many glorious pieces from the 14th century through to today, with special exhibitions on a wide range of subjects held regularly.

For fabulous architecture, the Karmeliterkloster is a beautiful Renaissance-period historic monastery, while the Dom cathedral is also worth a visit and contains a magnificent sculpture by Hans Backoffen portraying a scene from the crucifixion.

Frankfurt zoo offers an alternative to the wealth of museums and architecture and Bethmann Park makes an ideal place to relax after a day's sightseeing.

With many fabulous restaurants and a lively nightlife, Frankfurt has something for everyone.
