Visitors of Cologne spoiled for choice
With 2,000 years of culture and its own dialect, Cologne is a fascinating and exciting choice for travellers keen on taking city breaks.
With ancient Roman sites, huge Romanesque churches, lively shopping streets, splendid museums, magnificent architecture and delicious cuisine, Cologne has something on offer for every taste.
One of the highlights of the city is undoubtedly the spectacular Kolner Dom, which is Germany's biggest cathedral and took 600 years to complete.
It has soaring twin spires and is full with an impressive collection of art, including the Shrine of the Three Magi – a richly jewelled and gilded sarcophagus which is believed to contain the remains of the kings who followed a star to the stable where Jesus was born.
Other favourite attractions include the 12 great Romanesque churches in the inner city, the Museum Ludwig, which is famous for its collection of post-modern art, and the Imhoff-Stollwerck Chocolate Museum.
Visitors are also able to take in breathtaking views of Cologne from the cable railway high above the Rhine, which is open from April 1st until the end of October.
Cologne is a major train hub, with both Berlin and Munich just four and a half hours away, making it an excellent choice of destination for a rail holiday.
