Lounge by the beach in Brussels

Each summer, the banks of the Willebrook Canal in Brussels are transformed into a full-blown beach with Brussels-on-Sea.

Complete with straw huts and barbeques, the temporary seaside resort is set up during July and August, meaning people on a Brussels break can also have a taste of a relaxing beach-side holiday.

A day on the resort is completely free, including rental of a chaise longue, open air concerts and beach sports such as frisbee and volleyball.

There are even a team of professional masseuses on hand to ease sunburnt shoulders or help people relax after a day of seeing Brussels other sights.

Visitors can have their shoulders kneaded Shiatsu, Thai or Swedish style.

Anyone getting peckish can indulge in snacks and drinks from one of the many eateries.

The idea was launched in 2003, following in the footsteps of a similar initiative in Paris and has so far attracted over a million holidaymakers seeking a little relaxation amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

It is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 11:00 to 22:00 local time.
Paris's beach opens in three spots throughout the city each summer, with one dedicated to water sports and boating.
