Visit Bologna for the finest in Italian food
Bologna, the capital of the north-eastern region of Emilia-Romagna, offers visitors a relaxing alternative to the crowded cities of Florence and Venice.
Despite the many interesting attractions on offer, including two leaning towers, Bologna is generally free of the large tourist crowds that flock to many of Italy's other holiday destinations.
Ideal for those looking for weekend breaks, highlights include the Neptune Fountain, the Santa Maria dei Servi church and the Basilica Santuario della Madonna di San Luca – a hill-top sanctuary which can be seen from most areas of the city.
Bologna is also considered Italy's capital of food and one of the major events of the year is the City of Food festival which celebrates Bolognese local specialities and is held for three days in May.
During the festival each famous square and street in the city is allocated one of the many Bolognese treats, including tortellini, mortadella, cotechino and tagliatella, which are guaranteed to please your taste buds!
Bologna also has the advantage of being a key railway junction for northern Italy, with services to Rome and Milan, often Eurostar trains, running regularly.
