Musée Jean Lurçat et de la Tapisserie Contemporaine in Angers
Angers' Jean Lurçat Museum of Contemporary Tapestry is open all year, but closed on Mondays between 1st October and 30th June.
Jean Lurçat was a tapestry designer and painter whose work was inspired by Cubism. He developed some of the finest tapestries in the world, including his gouaches Little Green Girls and Evening in Granada, which demonstrate his use of combining severe design with rich colour.
Much of Lurçat's work is now contained in this museum and visitors can enjoy the ten-piece woven masterpiece, the Chant du Monde (Song of the World), among other gems which have been preserved here.
Contemporary works are also displayed by the gallery, giving up-and-coming artists the chance to show off their tapestry skills alongside the undeniable master of the genre.
Perhaps just as beautiful and interesting as any of the artworks contained inside the museum is the impressive building in which the artefacts are housed. Vaulted ceilings and intricate pillars make this an attractive setting for these striking works of art.
