Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam houses the largest assortment in the world of artworks from the master painter and is therefore privy to a full schedule of events all-year-round.

It contains more than 200 pieces in its permanent collection, including still-lifes, portraits and landscapes, accompanied by drawings and letters from Van Gogh (1853-1890).

The renowned Self-Portrait with Straw Hat, Sunflowers and The Bedroom can be viewed, to name a few.

Forthcoming special exhibitions include 'Vincent van Gogh and the French still life' and 'Anton Mauve and Vincent van Gogh: the master and his pupil' focusing on the painter's apprenticeship.

It was recently reported the Colours of the Night exhibit currently at the Museum of Modern Art in New York is due to move to the Amsterdam venue in early January 2009.

As well as work from the artist himself, other 19th-century names are featured alongside him from the impressionist and post-impressionist movements, such as Gauguin, Monet and Pisarro.

Their significance is that they either inspired Van Gogh or garnered inspiration from him, the venue explains.

Ongoing research at the museum includes the compilation of the complete correspondence of the painter and a project looking at "the methods and materials used by Van Gogh and his contemporaries".
