Friday
Start your weekend early with a Friday afternoon departure from London St Pancras International to Paris, at Paris transfer onto the overnight sleeper to Munich - Railbookers recommends upgrading to a deluxe cabin complete with ensuite bathroom so you arrive into Munich on Saturday morning in style.
Saturday
On arrival in Munich check-in at your hotel and then head straight to the central square - Marienplatz, which is presided over by the gothic New Town Hall or (Neues Rathaus) with its 260 foot tower complete with carillon or Glockenspiel.
To see another of Munich’s famous landmarks head to the 15th century Frauenkirche nearby. If you look behind the altar you will discover the 16th century Jan Polack's painting of the Virgin - "The Protecting Cloak".
After a spot of lunch in one of the cafés on the Marienplatz spend the afternoon in the presence of genius at the renowned Alte Pinakothek where you can see masterpieces by Rubens, Dürer, Brueghel and Cranach.
Sunday
Start your Sunday with a relaxing breakfast followed by a trip to Neuschwanstein Castle in the countryside surrounding Munich. This fairytale castle was the inspiration for Disney's Cinderella's Palace and dates back to the 1800s. Built by the reclusive King Ludwig II as a retreat from public life, ironically the castle now attracts record numbers of visitors each year.
On your return to Munich, walk in the footsteps of another Ludwig, King Ludwig I, who opened the Neue Pinakothek in 1853. This renowned museum holds an extensive collection of 18th and 19th century artwork from classicism to art nouveau.
Monday
On your last day treat yourself to a royal experience at the baroque Nymphenburg Palace, the 17th century building where the Bavarian Monarchs used to spend their summers. There is plenty to see at this splendid palace, from frescoes in the banquet hall to the adjoining landscaped park.
In the afternoon explore science and technology at The Deutsches Museum, one of the biggest museums of its kind and set on an island in the Isar River. This popular museum includes exhibits on transport, astronomy, glass-blowing, mining, and much more! Then board the train for your return journey to the UK.
