Arosa City Guide

While it is true that the Swiss resort of Arosa has played an integral role in the growth of skiing as a popular holiday pursuit, there is much more to the town than winter sports alone. This beautiful Alpine location, situated in the Schanfigger Valley to the south of Zürich and Chur, offers visitors a wealth of things to do and see all year round.

What to do and see in and around Arosa

Eggahaus Local History Museum
Visitors looking to learn a little about the history of their hosts should head to the Schanfigger Local History Museum, which can be found in Eggahaus in Innerarosa. The building has acted as a museum since 1949, but has itself played a vital role in the area's history, having been a focal point of local civic activity since the 16th century.

Music in Arosa
Two festivals dominate the musical calendar of Arosa: the Open Air Waldbühne Arosa and Jazz Days. The first of these is an open air opera festival held in the Alpine forests during July and August, while the second brings a host of international jazz performers to the mountain setting in July. Arosa also claims to host the highest brass band festival in Europe during April, while those visitors keen to really throw themselves in at the deep end can attend a yodeling workshop at the Kulturkreis, or Culture Club, in August.

Mountain Church
Well worth a visit during your break in Arosa is the small gothic church that was built in honour of the saints Barbara and Jodokus. Built in 1492 by the inhabitants of Arosa, Prätsch and Maran, the church also houses a spectacular organ dating back to the 18th century. Guided tours can be taken on Fridays from June to October.

Beauty and Relaxation
For many visitors to Arosa, the snow-peaks could not be further from their minds as they relax at the town's many pampering spots. Locations such as the Asrosa Kulm Hotel, Hotel BelArosa and the Hotel Cristallo are among those providing gym and beauty facilities, with many open to non-guests.

Hot-air Ballooning
If the spectacular view of the Alps from your ski-lift is not panoramic enough, then perhaps a trip in a hot-air balloon is what is required. Ballooning is enjoyed so much in Arosa that they dedicate a whole seven days to it during Alpine Ballooning Week, which takes place during January and February.

Mountains of Fantasy
Mountains of Fantasy is said to be the biggest multimedia laser show in Europe. Shows take place every Wednesday from mid-December to mid-March at the Mittelstation, reached by the Arosa-Weisshorn cable car.

Shopping on Poststrasse
At the end of the Arosa valley lies an enchanting village where everything needed for an Alpine dream can be found. The main shopping strip is along Poststrasse, while the Obersee lake and an ice rink provide fun diversions from the cafés and stores.
