What to do and see in and around Utrecht
Museum Catharijneconvent
A fascinating insight into Christian culture and art in the Netherlands, the Museum Catharijneconvent is housed in a medieval monastery and boasts a great variety of exhibits from 16th – 17th century artwork (including that of Rembrandt) to altar pieces and gold and silver artefacts.
Utrecht Canals
Enjoy a different perspective of this medieval city by taking to the water on one of Utrecht’s canals. Whether you choose to relax on a gondola or go on a boat tour there are few better ways to enjoy the sights and sounds of Utrecht.
Sonnenborgh - Museum & Sterrenwacht
Taking you to outer space the Sonnenborgh is a museum and observatory. Dating back to 1854 there is a lot to see and do in this former metrological institute where scientists once researched the solar system as well as the weather.
Aboriginal Art Museum
The colourful exhibits on display at the Aboriginal Art Museum pay tribute to the diversity of this artistic genre. The museum which was set up in 2001 was created in order to bring Aboriginal Art to the masses as well as to document the changing face of this art form.
Kasteel de Haar
This medieval castle and its attractive grounds underwent a huge restoration project over a century ago, which saw the renovation of both the interior as well as partial rebuilding of the structure itself. As well as exploring the beautiful interior of the building and its attractive setting the grounds hold many treasures such as ponds and fascinating aviaries.
Centraal Museum
Dating back to 1838 The Centraal Museum contains a large collection of art covering old masters, modern art, design, fashion and local history. This labyrinthine building has evolved over the years and has been a cloister, orphanage and psychiatric hospital in its time.
National Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug
Spanning 6,000 hectares of the Utrecht hills is the National Park. The National Park is a great location to explore stunning flora and fauna as well as the 100 species of birds that are bred in the park. Ideal for hiking or cycling around, the Park is the perfect place to get closer to nature.
Utrecht Cathedral
Also known as the Dom Church or the Cathedral of St Martin this gothic style cathedral dates back to 1254 although the entire building was not completed until the 16th century. It has been restored in recent years to the beautiful building we see today. The renowned Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and is worth climbing up for the wonderful views at the top.
Geldmusem
For the consumer in you, the recently opened Geldmuseum or money museum looks at money and the money culture. This unique museum with its many interactive exhibits displays coins dating as far back as 600 AD as well as showcasing the more recent Dutch banknotes issued by De Nederlandsche Bank since 1814.
