Maastricht City Guide

Maastricht is the capital of the Dutch province of Limburg and sits either side of the River Maas. The city has a rich history going back to the time of the Celts and then the Romans; as such the city has a wonderful combination of old and new architecture; from the 11th century Basilica of Our Beloved Lady to the futuristic Bonnefanten Museum. Have a coffee on Vrijthof Square, walk through history at The Caves of Mount St Pieter then enjoy a relaxing cruise on the River Maas.

What to do and see in and around Maastricht

Bonnefanten Museum
This silver torpedo shaped museum, designed by the Italian architect Also Rossi, contains a perfect blend of Old Masters and contemporary art. From Brueghel to 21st century installations this museum is well worth a visit.

Casemates
If you want to explore a world underneath Maastricht, go underground to the Maastricht Casemates – these subterranean galleries were created by mining activities in the 16th century and were used as shelter during times of siege.

Caves of Mount St Pieter
The Caves of Mount St Pieter represent thousands of years of history. Walk through man-made passages in this sandstone labyrinth. The pre-historic wall paintings are particularly impressive.

Basilica of Our Beloved Lady
This church is a lovely example of Romanesque architecture and dates back (in part) to the 11th century. The Basilica overlooks the square of the same name.

St Servatius Basilica
From its humble beginnings as a small, wooden chapel built on the grave of Saint Servatius, the first bishop of Holland, the Basilica of St Servatius have evolved throughout the centuries into this wonderful expansive stone church which is a popular place of pilgrimage.

River Cruise
Take to the water in Maastricht with a river cruise on the River Maas. Sit back and relax as you cruise past Mount St Pieter and an assortment of locks and bridges.

Vrijthof Square
You can find Vrijthof Square in the centre of the city; this cobbled, tree lined square is the ideal spot to relax with a coffee before visiting the nearby St Servatius Basilica.

Mondo Verde
The gardens of Mondo Verde allow you to explore flora and fauna from around the world, from China to Morocco, Japan to Russia, all without leaving Maastricht. Covering 25 hectares of land, Mondo Verde is a must see for the green-fingered among us and there is also a selection of animals as well.

This fascinating museum introduces you to the geology and biology of southern Limburg; from the swamps of the Carboniferous era, 350 million years ago, to the beginning of human life in the Netherlands, through to the present day flora and fauna of the area.
