What to do and see in and around Copenhagen

The Little Mermaid
Something of an iconic figure, the statue of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid is a popular tourist attraction and can be found in the city’s harbour. The statue, cast in bronze, was a present from the founder of Carlsberg, brewer Carl Jacobsen after he attended a ballet based on the Andersen’s fairy tale.

Amalienborg Palace
This Rococo masterpiece is the Danish Royals' retreat over the winter months. If you visit the Palace at midday you will be able to watch the changing of the guards.

The National Gallery
This well set out gallery is a must if you are an art lover, spanning 700 years of Western art. Works in the collection include masterpieces from names such as Rembrandt, Matisse and Picasso to name but a few.

Kronborg Castle
This Renaissance castle will be familiar to anyone who has ever read Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Situated on the sea in Elsinore this atmospheric castle dates back to 1574 and the reign of King Frederik II. The castle is home to one of the longest halls in Europe, the Knight’s Hall, which measures 62 metres as well as the legendary statue of Holger Danske. With its picturesque setting and lovely interior the Kronborg Castle is well worth a visit.

The National Museum
Housed in an 18th century mansion this fascinating museum charts the history of the Danes from the Stone Age to the present day with a huge collection of art and artefacts.

Round Tower
Dating back to 1637 and located in the Old Latin Quarter, this fascinating piece of architecture was originally built as an observatory. The tower contains a 209 metre long spiral ramp which takes visitors up 34 metres where they are greeted by a magnificent view over Copenhagen.

The Viking Ship Museum
This museum pays homage to a time when the Vikings ruled the waves. The museum is situated at the foot of Roskilde Fjord and has a collection of 5 restored Viking ships all built by different people for a variety purposes.

The Copenhagen Opera House
This modern enigma with its gold leaf and maple wood interior was designed by Henning Larsen in 2005 and is a sight to behold. It is a fascinating venue from which to enjoy both ballet and opera.

Join the shoppers and street performers on Europe’s longest pedestrian shopping street. From Louis Vuitton to Chanel, Strøget is a consumer’s paradise and a social hub.
