Linz City Guide
The Austrian city of Linz is a vibrant cultural centre with numerous art galleries and museums. Stroll around the attractive Botanical Gardens, visit the house in which Mozart once lived and be dazzled by the colourful Lentos – the city's Museum of Modern Art overlooking the Danube.
What to do and see in and around Linz
Botanical Gardens
Covering an area of 43,000 metres˛ with over 10,000 plant species, Linz’s Botanical Gardens is perfect for the green fingered visitor. For those particularly interested in cacti the gardens boast the finest collection throughout Europe.
Lentos – Museum of Modern Art
The Lentos – Museum of Modern Art was built on the banks of the River Danube in 2003 by Swiss architects Weber and Hofer is a work of art in itself with its glass casing attractively lit at night. The collection includes works by Rodtschenko, Man Ray, and Klimt.
Trinity Column
Standing proudly in Linz’s main square is the 20 metre high Baroque Trinity Column. Dating back to 1723, the white marble column, was built in memory of the end of the war of 1704, the fire of 1712 and the plague of 1713.
Church of the Minor Friars
Dating back to the 13th century this wonderful church, which was originally a monastery, is home to lovely stucco work as well as some high altar paintings by Bartolomeo Altomonte.
Mozarthaus
This attractive three-storey house was the residence of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1783, and it was here that he composed his "Linz Symphony". Look out for the 1957 bust of Mozart by sculpture W. Ritter in the house’s entrance.
Linz Castle
Dating back to the 8th century, Linz Castle has seen wars and fire and has served as a military hospital and barracks. Nowadays the castle is home to the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum.
St. Martin's Church
This pretty little church is reportedly the oldest in Austria and dates back to the end of the 8th century. The central structure of the building is of Roman origin as it was constructed from the debris of Roman buildings. The structure also includes Romanesque and Gothic elements which were added in later years.
New Cathedral
This striking looking neo-Gothic cathedral was built in 1862 by the same architect who built the magnificent gothic Cologne Cathedral, Vinzenz Statz.
Museum of the City of Linz
Formerly a monastery, this 17th century building, is now the Museum of the City of Linz, displaying the history, archeology and art of the region. Of particular note are the wonderful stained glass windows depicting the history of Linz.
Old Cathedral - "Ignatiuskirche"
This vast baroque cathedral was built in the latter half of the 17th century and boasts a painting by Antonio Belluci which takes pride of place above the attractive marble high altar.
